HELP ROADS Free and confidential non-residential services, support, and hotline for victims/survivors of domestic violence abuse and crimes.

HELP R.O.A.D.S (Reaching Out to Advocate for Domestic Abuse & Crime Survivors) offers a full range of bilingual non-residential family safety services in a wide-variety of flexible settings making them easily accessible throughout Brooklyn. Its office is located at a confidential address in East New York, Brooklyn – an underserved community with the highest incidence of domestic violence in Brooklyn. HELP R.O.A.D.S has extensive linkages with community institutions, schools, neighborhood groups, churches, tenant organizations, police, and community-based social services. Through these linkages, the program has been able to conduct outreach to victims of domestic violence, educate community members and agencies about issues of family violence. "Research shows that when the body is in a traumatic state, a flood of chemicals saturates the brain and pushes people into a “fight, flight or freeze” response, according to D’Aquilla. “Memories now get filed in places they may not have been filed before,” she said.

D’Aquilla compares this to writing paragraphs onto a piece of paper, ripping those up and tossing pieces into the air. The sentences get stored in different places and the brain doesn’t know where to recall them until a survivor encounters a specific trigger. “All of a sudden that memory is found because your brain’s like ‘Oh, wait, we’ve seen this before,’” she said. “It’s almost like you have a flashback.”

Cases are increasing in NYC. As of July 11, 223 people in New York City have tested positive for orthopoxvirus. All cases are likely monkeypox. There are likely more cases that have not been diagnosed.

"Effective immediately, a sailor, Marine, cadet or midshipman who makes an unrestricted report of sexual assault through the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office or the Family Advocacy Program will not be disciplined for minor collateral misconduct."

The Department of the Navy implemented a Safe-to-Report Policy for victims of sexual assault, eliminating a critical barrier to service member reporting of sexual assault.
