Carbonaro Scholarship Fund is to identify one or more high school senior football players from Brooklyn, New York who has, by his actions, demonstrated academic achievement, service to his community, sportsmanship on the field and an unselfish spirit as exemplified by Coach Carbonaro. Coach Carbonaro’s dedicated service to the John Jay High School Brooklyn Community for nearly thirty years began v
ery early in his life. He attended John Jay High School in Park Slope, Brooklyn when it was known as Manual Training. He proudly graduated with “four letters”: football, track and field, soccer and baseball. He left Brooklyn briefly for four years to attend, and play football for, Ithaca College… of which he spoke about often, frequently sang its theme song and never forgot a donation. He later returned to John Jay High School, the home of the Geronimo Indians, to teach and to coach and he never left…. his mind and his spirit were dedicated to, and his passion was, teaching, coaching and mentoring the students who were in his classes, in his hallways and on his field… his kids. He touched the lives of decades of students from the sixties until the nineties. He saw many changes, but his belief that “with fear comes respect”, remained constant; he believed that only then could the “learning” fall into place. His shout was deafening, but so was his compassion. It was this balance that made him an effective teacher, coach and mentor. He taught his John Jay kids, as well as his own, that until we as a school, a home or a community practice discipline, we cannot be principled people. The team and the family always come before the individual and, as a result, he made men out of kids whose lives might have otherwise taken a fateful course… and this is my Dad’s legacy. The Fund netted over $18,000.00 this year and has given away six $6,000.00 college scholarships thus far. Your donation/sponsorship in ANY AMOUNT is very much appreciated and necessary to keep our foundation growing. Help us keep it alive! Support Education Through Athletics
