LBDW’s Story
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
______________________________________
I am a dance maker whose voice is defined by my generation and personal experiences. My observations of the modern world influence each decision I make in the creative process. I ask the question: “How does the outside world effect human circumstance, and what does it emotionally uncover within us?”. Taking personal experiences and analyzing them in a global sense, I aim to uncover dark truths about our existence, diving beyond the surface, drawing up stories that perhaps, one would never truly reveal in any proper social setting. I see myself foremost, as a director of honesty onstage. Every moment must be real for my dancers, so it resonates with audiences. Every movement should have intention and significance, nothing should feel contrived; their actions must become imbued with sincerity.
I start with a concept that stirs me, a picture, a couple on the street, or a theme I see reoccurring in my life, or the lives around me. My movement vocabulary comes from those feelings, often has a ferocious flow, and is extreme in style and pacing. My work has a strong connection to the feminine as the hero, but at the same time, does not glorify the feminist approach. I want audiences to identify with my stories and their characters in a truthful manner, yet one that may not always be comfortable to sit with. Sexism, sexuality, human relation, degradation, social expectation and deep inner emotion are themes that tend to drive the subtext of my work. My themes are empirical, but my final ex*****on lies somewhere between truth and fantasy.
Coming from a theatre and cabaret background, and strongly influenced by Tanztheatre, I aim to entice the audience with what may at first seem quiet and beautiful on the surface. Then, by peeling away layers and unearthing personal realities, the audience is drawn deeply into a world that is often a more surprising and truthful place. My work intends to reveal the darker side of the world’s effect on the human experience and existence in today’s society.
