What does it take to close Rikers… and what comes next?

As New York City works toward closing Rikers Island, the conversation cannot end with the closure of the jails. Building a safer, more humane system requires strong community-based alternatives, reentry services, and housing that meets people where they are.

In this conversation, Providence House’s Rita Taddonio, Chief Program Officer, sits down with Dana Kaplan, New York City’s Close Rikers Czar, to discuss the challenges and opportunities of this historic transition, and the critical role community-based organizations can play.

They also explore what justice-impacted women need to successfully rebuild their lives, from safe housing and mental health services to family reconnection and gender-responsive support.

Watch the full conversation at the link below and learn why we believe Providence House can help build what comes next.

Staff Day: Work hard, laugh harder!! ☺️

The Providence House team took a trip to Bowlero in White Plains for a day of connection, appreciation, and a little fun outside of the office. From team-building activities and games to music and plenty of time to unwind, it was a chance for our staff to let loose and celebrate all that we accomplish together.

We also took a special moment to recognize team members who have been part of the Providence House family for 3 years or more. This year’s honorees included our dedicated Family Transitional Housing and Women’s Justice Program case and program managers, whose commitment and hard work make a meaningful difference in the lives of the women, children, and families we serve.

We’re grateful for the people behind the mission. Thank you for everything you do, every day. 💙

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming a dedicated team of volunteers from UBS to one of our supportive housing residences for a day of service that made a lasting impact.

Before getting to work, our Director of Supportive Housing, Yuberkis Vargas, shared what supportive housing truly means and why creating safe, stable, and welcoming spaces is so essential for the people we serve. Inspired by that mission, the team spent the day clearing months of overgrown weeds and brambles, transforming an outdoor space where residents gather to relax, connect, and enjoy time together.

It was inspiring to watch these volunteers give their time, energy, and care until the project was complete. Even more rewarding was seeing the joy and appreciation on our residents' faces as they experienced their refreshed backyard for the first time.

Thank you, UBS, for investing in our community and helping create spaces where our residents can continue to thrive. 💙🌿
