El Puente Green Light District

El Puente Green Light District The El Puente Green Light District is a strategic ten-year initiative to sustain, grow, green, and celebrate Williamsburg’s Southside community.

The El Puente Green Light District is a ten-year initiative of the Williamsburg Southside Community to exercise our right to self-determination. Together, as a united community, we will build on the victories of the past to secure our future as a model American neighborhood for health, education, culture and the environment. The Green Light District (GLD) takes El Puente’s “whole person/whole comm

unity” approach to the streets, going door-by-door and block-by-block to complete the transformation of the Southside of Williamsburg (Los Sures), from a past as one of the most environmentally and economically challenged neighborhoods New York City into a 2020 future as a healthy, safe, culturally rich and civically engaged community. This campaign comes at a time when residents are struggling desperately to remain in the community and are seeking new avenues to advocate for their rights. The vision for the initiative and direction of the following program areas have been shaped by the involvement of Southside neighbors as members of the Green Light District Development Team, aided by advisors and experts from various fields.
● Arts & Culture: Addressing the race and class divide in our gentrifying community by creating equitable access to funding, infrastructure and community venues for artistic expression, institutional development, and cultural participation.

● Affordable Living: Expanding local control of how energy is produced and used in both new and old buildings, reducing carbon emissions, and creating green jobs.

● Health (Salud): Door-to-door assessments and actions plans promoting individual and community wellness, increasing access to healthy food and traditional ways of healing; exercise and reducing stress, household toxicity and outdoor air pollution.

● Education: Supporting academic and intellectual attainment as well as creative expression objectives for every GLD resident; creating GLD Projects for young adults in and out of school; and instituting a 13thYear (1st year of college) at El Puente.

● Greening Spaces: Reimagining the built environment and integrating streets, infrastructure, open spaces and the waterfront to create healthy, safe and vibrant public spaces.

Meditation can wipe away the day's stress, bringing with it inner peace. See how you can easily learn to practice meditation whenever you need it most.

If stress has you anxious, tense and worried, consider trying meditation. Spending even a few minutes in meditation can restore your calm and inner peace.

Anyone can practice meditation. It's simple and inexpensive, and it doesn't require any special equipment and you can practice meditation wherever you are — whether you're out for a walk, riding the bus, waiting at the doctor's office or even in the middle of a difficult business meeting.

Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years. Meditation originally was meant to help deepen understanding of the sacred and mystical forces of life. These days, meditation is commonly used for relaxation and stress reduction.

Meditation is considered a type of mind-body complementary medicine. Meditation can produce a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil mind.

During meditation, you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress. This process may result in enhanced physical and emotional well-being.

And these benefits don't end when your meditation session ends. Meditation can help carry you more calmly through your day and may help you manage symptoms of certain medical conditions.

The emotional benefits of meditation can include:

Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations
Building skills to manage your stress
Increasing self-awareness
Focusing on the present
Reducing negative emotions
Increasing imagination and creativity
Increasing patience and tolerance
