After hearing from neighbors about concerns over the smells coming from Metropolitan Packaging in the Java/Franklin street area, NBN took action. Earlier this year, we sampled and analyzed the air to determine what compounds were contributing to the smells and to begin to take a look at whether they may be a concern for community health.

We will be informally presenting our findings TONIGHT, Tuesday (9/17) at 7 pm at the Java Street Garden - hope to see you there!

In collaboration with redshedcommunitygarden, North Brooklyn Neighbors will be offering free soil testing on Sunday, September 8 from 10 am to noon at the garden.

We will be using our XRF machine to offer free soil testing of the heavy metal (i.e. lead) content of your soil and results will be available immediately. Bring a sample of your soil in a new, clear, plastic sandwich bag with about 2 cups of dry soil. Information on safely dealing with high levels of lead in soil will be available in English, Polish, and Spanish. No registration required.

Since last year's event, we've made significant strides in soil testing and community health protection:

*Held 2 soil testing events where around half of samples brought to us by the public tested well over recommendations for lead levels; shared information on how to safely use space with contaminated soil
*Met with community partners and elected officials to share concerns about soil lead findings in McCarren Park
*Shared McCarren Park soil lead findings with NYC Parks Department leading to mulch being spread in some of the most problematic areas of the park resulting in greater community health protection
*Published “Sites of Concern: Public Spaces Soil Testing” report detailing soil contamination findings of 69 public spaces in North Brooklyn
*Continuing to push for more protection and more comprehensive soil testing in McCarren Park
*Assisted two community projects by offering complimentary soil testing
