PUERTO RICO SYMPOSIUM - WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
In the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico's Health Care system has undergone an incredible "stress test" - a hit to the infrastructure paired with a severe increase in need - straining both the physical and human capital that makes healthcare work.

This unprecedented set of circumstances provides an opportunity for Puerto Rican and stateside primary care providers, behavioral health clinicians and policymakers to come together to share their experience and expertise as they explore the theme of "Rebuilding Better."

Disaster Psychiatry Outreach (DPO) in full partnership with Mental Health Association of NYC (MHA-NYC) and Puerto Rico Academy of Medical Directors, Inc. (Academia de Directores Médicos de Puerto Rico) have joined forces to organize this much needed symposium.

More specifically, the conference with an expected audience of 200-250 of local providers, policy makers, first responders and the public to address some of the following topics:
+Disaster Preparedness and Response - lessons learned; capacity building, existing community needs and vulnerabilities - how to best capitalize on good will post disaster and move beyond the emergency.
+Best Practices and Innovation - outcome driven care, paying for transformation in the times of limited resources. "Reusing the wheel" - best practices and innovation across the states.
+Total Health Approach - medical, behavioral, substance use, pharmacy and wellness integration. Making a case for integrated care.
+Provider Toolbox - concrete tools and approaches.

CrearConSalud, Inc. is a non-profit created by a group of Puerto Rican psychiatrists living in the U.S. and members of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). CrearConSalud is registered as a non-profit in PR since late August 2017, but the group has worked on a series of trips to PR since 2015, assessing and re-assessing different community and mental health (MH) needs and doing educational activities in the island. We have been lucky to be able to assist the incredibly dedicated team working on Saint Thomas (US Virgin Islands) as part of the Hurricane Maria Response. When Dr. J. Zen Meservy, MD, reached out to DPO just a few short days after Hurricane Maria devastated the island we reached out to our volunteers to see who would be available and what can be done. We stand in solidarity with those affected by the tragic and heinous assault in Las Vegas. We are in contact with local disaster mental health officials to provide support and resources as the response continues to develop. We are heartbroken and looking for ways to help - if your community has been directly touched by this tragedy and your providers are looking to connect to various experts in the field of disaster response and recovery - please don't hesitate to reach out and we will do all we can to connect you with the person or team best positioned to respond.
