These students are not “future leaders.”

They are our current leaders.

Last week, Chabad on Campus International’s Chief Operating Officer, Rabbi Avi Weinstein, sat down with Jewish college students at the Jewish Summer Fellowship program to talk about what Jewish leadership actually looks like for this generation
Drawing on his vantage point overseeing our network’s operations, he gave them a rare, bird’s-eye view of Jewish campus life.

His message was clear:

These students are our leaders.

And they’re the beating heart behind everything we do.

In Chabad on Campus International’s continued effort to make Torah learning even more accessible to Jews on campus, JewishU held its first-ever Growth Summit for Shluchos.

JewishU, an academy facilitated by Chabad on Campus International, offers Jewish courses to thousands of Jewish students on campuses worldwide. The courses, taught by Chabad on Campus Rabbis and Rebbetzins, are tailored to be accessible and engaging for every Jew on campus- regardless of their background.

Over 20 Shluchos from across North America gathered at Chabad on Campus at the American University Chabad AU in Washington, DC for a one-day intensive JewishU training.

The Shluchos dove into collaborative sessions and brainstormed practical strategies on how to better engage more students in more frequent learning on their campus.

They left inspired and empowered to bring JewishU to thousands of Jewish college students this semester.

Rabbi Shlomo Rothstein, co-director of the Rohr Chabad House and Lubeck Center for Jewish Life at Vanderbilt University, was among three leaders who were awarded the “Live Long and Prosper” Tribute Award by the Nimoy-Knight Foundation.

This award acknowledges leaders who live their lives with compassion, courage, and service.

“When I first came to college, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do anything Jewish. After Jewish day school and youth group, I thought I was done with all of that. I didn’t even attend Chabad for two years because I thought Chabad was “too religious” for me. I assumed the students just spent all day praying with the Rabbi, and I was confused as to why students even showed up there.

For the first two years of college, I avoided my Chabad Rabbi’s and Rebbetzin’s invites and texts and told people I simply wasn’t interested.

One day, the campus dining hall was closed, and I needed a place to eat dinner. I saw Chabad was having a BBQ, and so I did what I thought I’d never do and walked through those Chabad House doors.

It was one of the best BBQs I’d been to. Chabad started to grow on me, and I even began making friends there. I slowly warmed up to the fact that I loved this place.

I started taking JewishU courses and Sinai Scholars. I originally joined so I could earn some money while at school, but by the end of the school year, I really just loved spending time at Chabad with my friends and the Chabad family. I started attending JewishU classes multiple nights a week.

These courses helped me understand more about what it means for me to be Jewish.

After taking so many classes, I forgot about the money and realized I had earned enough for a JewishU trip to Panama.

I was hesitant at first about what a trip with Chabad meant. Would the food be bad? Would the activities be boring? The trip exceeded my expectations. Between ziplining, boating, and exploring all of Panama, I got to experience a true five-star Chabad trip.

Despite only being a part of Chabad for two years, my friends, learning, and memories will last long after I graduate.”
