In today’s New York Daily News:

New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s anti-union streak continues.

Hochul claims she “grew up in a union family” yet she keeps failing union families across the state.

Democrats are supposed to support workers— not repress them.

TWU Local 100 continues to prioritize safe buses for our members and riders.

At the crack of dawn today, Local 100 officers and Safety reps were out in all three divisions (TA Surface, MaBSTOA, MTA Bus) to perform routine safety inspections.

TA Surface Vice President Gary Rosario led the team at Flatbush Depot in Brooklyn, while MaBSTOA Division Chairs Sean Battaglia, Claude Marshall, and Scott Steinberg joined forces at Kingsbridge Depot in the Bronx. MTA Bus Vice President Danny D’Amato and Chair Mike Capocci spearheaded efforts at College Point Depot in Queens.

Several hundred buses across the three depots were found with various hazards and defects. The buses are then scheduled for repairs.

🗣️ Connecting with the next generation of transit workers.

Last week, members and representatives from Local 100 participated in the Erasmus Hall High School Career & Transition Fair in Flatbush, Brooklyn.

The annual event spotlights post-secondary career opportunities beyond the traditional college pathway. Students were encouraged to explore futures in civil service, skilled trades, labor unions, and local businesses.

Despite we challenges we face, transit jobs are good jobs— thanks to a strong union. Hard fought gains such as steady pay, excellent benefits, a pension, and job security are some of the reasons to consider a career within the tens of thousands of professionals who Move New York.

Among those on hand to share their experiences with Transit were Car Inspector and CED Section Chair Matt McMillan, MaBSTOA Bus Operator and Working Women’s Committee member LaClesha Spears, TA Bus Operator and union staffer Cade John, and RTO Conductor Angela Vargas.

TWU Local 100 is proud to support the re-election of U.S. Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) to a sixth term in Congress representing the people of Upper Manhattan and the West Bronx.

Local 100 members and officers, including President John V. Chiarello and Financial Secretary-Treasurer Carlos Bernabel, joined the congressman in support this afternoon at a campaign event in Harlem.

Espaillat, the first Dominican-American elected to Congress, has been a dedicated ally of NYC transit workers and a consistent advocate in Washington for funding mass transit and infrastructure projects in New York.

Primary elections are on Tuesday, June 23rd and early voting begins June 13th. The general election will be held on Tuesday, November 3rd.

Just a reminder: while leadership is still negotiating with the TA to ensure we receive a fair and equitable contract, the wages and benefits from our expired contract is still in effect because of a section in the Taylor Law (1967).

The 1982 Triborough Amendment is a section in the Taylor Law that prevents management from lowering wages, cutting healthcare or reversing any contractual benefit just because the contract has expired. However, this protection means that public sector unions cannot strike without severe penalties such as losing dues check offs and fines.

In 1977 it was proposed that the “Taylor Law” should be revised to allow unions to strike but this would have meant that management would have the right to disregard contract terms once expired. This amendment to the Taylor Law protects workers’ rights and stability during contract negotiations. Transport Workers Union (TWU)New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO

TWU Local 100 scored a win this week with Tier 6—the cap on OT counted toward our pensions jumped from $21,589 to $30,000, with an additional 3% to be added each year after.

This is just the latest positive change in the years we have fought for improvements to Tier 6.

In 2012, we were able to retain 25/55 retirement. In 2022, the vesting period was slashed in half from 10 years to 5, and OT exempted from bumping members into a higher contribution band. In 2024 the Final Average Salary calculation was switched from being based on the highest 5 years of a member’s earnings to the highest 3 years.

All of these changes were results of the commitment and participation of members in rallies, our yearly Lobby Day trips and constant advocacy campaigns.

There are still improvements to be made, including lowering the contribution rate for all workers, further reducing or eliminating the OT cap and fixing the early retirement penalties.

Let’s keep fighting the good fight.

In this week’s new hires class we welcomed promotional Train Operators and new members from Maintenance of Way.

Officers from RTO (B Division Vice Chair Aaron Morrison and Nivea Luke) remind promotionals that as Train Operators they are required to know their lineups (routes).

Officers from M.O.W (Track Division Chair Carlos Albert, Vice Chairs Rey Cardona, Ryan Carr and Kevin Mahase) urge new members to follow the rules and ask as many questions as possible. Transport Workers Union (TWU)New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO
