Asters are in full bloom at NBG! 💜🌼

Look closely and you’ll notice their sunny yellow centers gradually turning pink. As the tiny flowers in the center age and are pollinated, they change color, signaling to visiting insects which flowers still have pollen and nectar to offer.

Blooming well into fall, asters provide an essential food source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators preparing for the colder months.

One of autumn’s most beautiful and hardworking flowers! 🐝

A turtle, a tree, and the land beneath our feet. 🐢🌳

In one Lenape creation story, the earth emerges on the back of a turtle, and a tree grows from the land it carries.

Inspired by this story, NBG co-founder Jimmy Johnson James Johnson created a living arrangement, planting a tree on the back of a turtle sculpture as a tribute to the Indigenous history of this land.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the Lenape people, the original inhabitants of Lenapehoking, which includes present-day Brooklyn, and recognize their enduring connection to this land.

A reminder that caring for the land also means remembering its history.

🪨 A little treasure is hiding at Narrows Botanical Gardens!

We spotted this colorful creation from Bay Ridge Rocks! , a neighborhood tradition of painting and hiding rocks to spread a little joy. We left it right where we found it for someone else to discover.

Next time you’re strolling through the gardens, keep your eyes peeled! 👀🌿
