Founded in 1995, Narrows Botanical Gardens is a volunteer-run, 4.5-acre oasis along Brooklyn’s Shore Road, overlooking the Narrows waterway, where native plants, wildlife, and community stewardship come together.

Wonderful people make wonderful things happen. 🌿

Another great Volunteer Saturday, and so much was accomplished! Thank you to everyone who showed up, braved the summer sun, conquered the weeds, and, most importantly, helped plant dozens of seedlings to expand the Sensory Garden.

A 20-foot stretch of weeds is now on its way to becoming a beautiful garden, with Rudbeckia and purple coneflower among the new additions. 🌼

These little plants will have the rest of the summer and fall to establish their roots, and by next summer, we hope they’ll reward us with a wonderful display.

JAMES “JIMMY” JOHNSON
Co-Founder, VP & Landscape Designer

Jimmy has been part of NBG from the very beginning, helping transform a neglected stretch of Shore Road into the gardens we know and love today. His creativity and landscape design have helped shape NBG for more than 30 years.

RICHARD “RICHIE” HAUGLAND
Co-Founder, President & Head Gardener

For nearly 30 years, Richie has helped grow and care for NBG. His deep knowledge of plants and hands-on dedication have shaped much of what you see throughout the gardens today.

Linda has been part of NBG since its earliest days. A familiar face around the gardens, she has spent decades welcoming volunteers, bringing people together and pitching in wherever she’s needed.

Meet Our Rescued Residents 🐢
Get to know the turtles that call our Wildlife & Turtle Sanctuary home. Open 11-3 PM SAT-SUN (weather permitting)

🐢 Eastern Box Turtle - A NY native woodland turtle that lives mostly on land. Its unique shell pattern provides camouflage. Box turtles spend the winter brumating beneath leaf litter and loose soil.

🐢🐢Painted Turtle - A native New York aquatic turtle, commonly found in ponds, marshes and other slow-moving waters.

🐢🐢🐢Red-eared Slider - Not native to New York and common in the pet trade. Sliders are often surrendered or released when they outgrow their homes and can live for decades. Pet turtles should never be released into the wild. They can compete with native turtles and disrupt local ecosystems.
