Last week, the work of Brooklyn Book Bodega took center stage at the New York Liberty game where we were honored as Nonprofit of the Game!

Many of our supporters came to the game to cheer on the New York Liberty and support our work of expanding book access across the city. Brooklyn Book Bodega cofounders Rebecca Cohen, Seema Aghera, and Tamara Jachimowicz were recognized on the court in the pre-game festivities, along with board chair Analisa Barrett. We also met tons of new faces that stopped by our table in the concourse to learn more about what we do.

Congratulations to the New York Liberty on another win, and thank you for spotlighting us!

Brooklyn Book Bodega is proud to announce its fourth year of partnership with the Guru Krupa Foundation! With their ongoing support, they've played a key role in helping sustain and grow our programming and book distribution efforts.

The Guru Krupa Foundation sponsors Brooklyn Book Bodega’s Community Day events, which provide free books and educational resources to children and families from across the city. The foundation also supports the I ❤️ MY B😽D📚GA: Building Libraries for Kids 0–5 family workshop, which focuses on helping families build home libraries while sharing practical strategies to support early literacy.

Thank you, Guru Krupa Foundation, for helping drive forward our mission to increase the number of 100+ book homes for kids 0-18 in NYC. We're deeply appreciative of your continued support, and for the progress we've made together!

Meet one of our long-time volunteers, Daniel! Daniel found out about Brooklyn Book Bodega through our Community Day events and then began volunteering with us.

Daniel says, "I love all of the books I get to come across... but what really keeps me coming back is the people and the community. Everyone at Brooklyn Book Bodega is amazing!"

A huge thank you to Daniel and all of our spectacular volunteers. They truly keep our mission moving forward, and we couldn't do this work without their time and dedication!

Our volunteer community is one of the best in New York, and it's a great way to meet fellow book lovers and make new friends! If you're interested in joining us, check out opportunities at brooklynbookbodega.org/volunteer.

Access is an important core value for Brooklyn Book Bodega. We believe there should be zero barriers to book access. We give books away so cost no longer acts as an obstacle to ownership. When kids have access to books, it has positive effects on many aspects of their lives, from mental and physical health to education and financial attainment.

We view book access as a public health issue. Despite the resources and wealth in New York City, many communities are classified as book deserts—areas where there’s very few books available for sale or lending. Furthermore, the cost of a new hardcover book averages over $20, making it even more difficult for families to build their home libraries.

By making books accessible to children and families, we’re opening the door to opportunity and creating a more literate and equitable city.

Stay tuned for our next core value, Re-Use, and learn more about our work and how you can get involved at brooklynbookbodega.org.

Shout out to author Emma Straub for donating several boxes of books to us this past week! These books will be processed, sorted, and stamped at our Book Hub and then make their way to kids across New York City. A big thank you to Emma for the support during this busy season when books are flying off our shelves!
