Yesterday we mourned Trayvon Martin, who would have been celebrating his 31st birthday had he not been murdered by a misguided man masquerading as law enforcement in February 2012. Trayvon was just 17 years old when his life was unjustly taken away when visiting the store while staying with his father in Florida. He was shot in cold blood by the cowardly racist killer George Zimmerman, who was patrolling the area as part of a neighborhood watch program. Against the advisement of local police on the phone, and neighborhood watch practice, Zimmerman left his vehicle to approach Trayvon, and a scuffle ensued, at which point Zimmerman brandished his weapon and shot Martin dead.

Trayvon was a boy who was robbed of his right to exist, grow, thrive, and contribute to society, never aging to reap all the rewards a life could promise. That promise and its potential was ripped away from him and his family when George Zimmerman, motivated by fear and prejudice, acted above the law and took Trayvon’s life. Police brutality and violence has plagued the black community since this nation’s inception, and today is no different. In recent news, we are seeing similar devastating stories with the prevalence of paramilitary forces scattered throughout neighborhoods across the nation. Citizens are still being murdered in cold blood for exercising their right to protest, and federal forces have become emboldened with immunity to act with violent prejudice against the public.

BLAC demands the immediate removal of ICE and all affiliations from our communities, and continues to advocate for trustworthy public safety, free of corruption and over policing. May we continue to protect our rights and one another, and may Trayvon rest in power.

Hi Neighbors, Democracy can’t wait — and neither can we.
Donald Trump has issued a dangerous executive order rooted in lies and disinformation — the same playbook used to suppress voters of color, immigrants, and working-class communities. Now those same threats are creeping into New York.

We can’t afford to sit back. That’s why we’re taking action on May 9th together with New Yorkers for Inclusive Democracy, as part of a statewide Day of Action to demand that Albany act now to defend our voting rights.

🗳️ Make a call to protect the vote in New York:
Tell your legislators to pass the full New Yorkers for Inclusive Democracy package, including:
Enhanced Automatic Voter Registration (EAVR) (S88/A6772)
The Democracy During Detention Act (DDDA) (S440/A2121)

📞 Call 833-345-2556 to be automatically connected - OR - 📱Text INCLUSIVE to 63033 to get a callback

We know what happens when politicians wait too long — our rights disappear. Let’s raise our voices and make New York a national leader in protecting democracy for all communities.

Thanks for taking action.

In solidarity,

Dear Partner,

On the 60th anniversary of the introduction of the Voting Rights Act, the fundamental right to vote is under nationwide attack - and New York cannot afford to be complacent. While other states roll back voting rights, Albany must take bold action to strengthen access to the ballot and protect our most vulnerable communities.

Join New Yorkers for Inclusive Democracy on Monday, March 17, 2025, in Albany for Democracy Can’t Wait: Voting Rights Day, where we will mobilize, advocate, and demand action to protect and expand voting rights in New York.

Why This Matters
Sixty years ago, the Voting Rights Act was introduced in Congress as one of the centerpieces of the civil rights movement. Now, in 2025, with a Trump Administration threatening our democracy, New York must lead the way and help fulfill the promise of the Voting Rights Act by strengthening voting rights and ballot access—especially for Black, Latine, AAPI, and immigrant communities.

On March 17th, we will mark the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act introduction and:

✅ Fight for bold voting rights legislation, including:
Enhanced Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) (S88) – Expanding access for 2.7 million eligible New Yorkers.
Democracy During Detention Act (S440/A2121) – Ensuring eligible voters in detention can cast their ballots.
$10.8 million in state funding for voter registration and outreach.

✅ Meet directly with lawmakers to demand immediate action on voting rights.

✅ Make our voices heard in the media at a press conference in the NY State Capitol.
