Did you know? Lyda D. Newman was an inventor and a known activist for women’s suffrage. Ms. Newman created a hairbrush that was durable and could be taken apart for cleaning. Most hairbrushes at the time were made using animal hair, and the material was too soft to effectively treat African American hair. Newman’s hairbrush used synthetic fibers, which made it more durable and more sanitary. Her unique design also included a compartment in the brush to collect debris like dandruff and dirt that could be removed easily for cleaning. She was one of the organizers of an African American branch of the Woman Suffrage Party, which fought to give women the legal right to vote. Her memory lives on today through her hairbrush design, which allowed African American women to have a hair product catered to them, and the change that she helped create by enabling women to vote.

Did you know? On April 26, 1892, Sarah Boone of New Haven, Connecticut, became the first Black woman in Connecticut to be awarded a patent, for an improvement in the use of an ironing board. Mrs. Boone invention is the “predecessor” to our modern ironing board, containing many similar elements. It narrowed at the top to fit inside clothes, it had padding on the side to prevent unwanted impressions, and it was collapsible to be stored easily.

Marie Van Brittan Brown was an African American woman who contributed her livelihood to the invention of the first home security system. She was born in 1922 in Queens, New York, she greatly saw the importance of protection in her area, while being a nurse. Ms. Brown often worked late hours and felt very vulnerable while living in an area with a high crime rate. She constantly looked for ways to live safely, and while seeing how slow the response was by the police, in 1966 Ms. Brown applied for a patent with her husband Albert Brown. Her system was a motorized camera that would project images on a monitor with four peepholes. In addition, her invention included a remote control that could unlock doors for easy access to first responders when needed. She was interviewed by the New York Times in 1969 for her invention, and was granted an award later that year from the National Scientists Committee. Her closed-circuit system is still being referenced by other patents as of 2013.
