As the Deputy Director of the PREA Unit at the NYC Department of Correction and a leader in the National Latino Peace Officers Association, she is a true champion for justice, safety, and community empowerment.

Honoring Service and Valor: The 18th Annual Scholarship Gala
The New York League of Puerto Rican Women, Inc. is honored to present the Leadership Award to Detective Joseph A. Ayala, a distinguished law enforcement officer, community advocate, and proud son of the Bronx whose impact extends far beyond the badge.
Since joining the New York City Police Department in 2008, Detective Ayala has dedicated his career to protecting New Yorkers. As a member of the elite Gun Violence Suppression Division, he has played a critical role in safeguarding communities and reducing violence throughout the city. His courage and commitment to duty earned him the prestigious Combat Cross, the NYPD's second-highest award for extraordinary heroism.

Equally inspiring is Detective Ayala's unwavering commitment to service beyond law enforcement. As President of the NYPD Hispanic Society, he has helped raise more than $100,000 for Autism and Cancer awareness initiatives while building impactful partnerships, including collaborations with GOYA Foods that have provided meals and essential resources to thousands of underserved families across New York City.

A mentor, coach, and community leader, Detective Ayala also serves on the Board of Directors of the NYPD Holy Name Society. His dedication to faith, family, and community exemplifies the very essence of leadership and public service. Through his actions, he continues to inspire future generations and strengthen the fabric of our city.

​The countdown is officially on. In just a little over a month, The New York League of Puerto Rican Women, Inc. will host our 18th Annual Scholarship Gala, and we are thrilled to announce our Man of the Year Honoree: Robert Cordero, Chief Executive Officer of Grand Street Settlement.
​Since 2015, Robert has served as the visionary Executive Director and CEO of Grand Street Settlement. Under his transformative leadership, the organization has grown from a $15 million to an over $60 million operating budget, ensuring that this historic institution continues to thrive into its 110th year of service.
​Robert’s impact is felt across the Lower East Side, Brooklyn, and—for the first time in the agency's history—the Bronx. Grand Street provides vital programs to over 18,500 low-income New Yorkers, with a major focus on expanding Head Start and early childhood services. A former educator and community organizer, Robert’s career is defined by advocacy and innovation, earning him the Joan H. Tisch Community Health Prize and recognition as a Latino Trailblazer by City & State.
