This group of row houses on Hancock Street in Bed-Stuy was built for developer George H. Stone. Stone owned and developed many buildings in this area in the 1870s and 1880s; these were built in 1884. For reference, most of the buildings in this part of Bed-Stuy were built in this twenty-year period. Prior to this, the land that makes up the neighborhood was four family farms that were subdivided into lots for development. It was one of the fastest neighborhoods to develop from farmland to residential and had some of New York’s most prolific architects designing homes such as Heinz and Lafarge and Montrose Morris. These were designed by Gilbert A. Schellenger. 198-202 Hancock Street were landmarked as a part of the Bedford Historic District on December 8th, 2015.

For Women’s History Month, Kidz Who Care (our neighborhood kids group that does good deeds) put together beautiful toiletry bags and wrote encouraging affirmations on notecards. They then took a short drive to donated the giftbags to a neighbor charity - St. John’s Bread & Life. They also participated in a workshop on gratitude and humbleness, exploring how those values can empower both themselves and the wider community. Shout out to The Laundromat Project who made it all possible and to the Hsba2 kids that participated!

On Saturday, March 8th, the Hancock Street Block Association #2 (HSBA2), in partnership with Siloam Presbyterian Church, hosted the Senior Health & Wellness Day — a special event made possible by a grant from The Laundromat Project. This gathering provided seniors aged 55+ with a day of relaxation, connection, and creative engagement, featuring a free chair yoga session, a floral arrangement workshop, and complimentary breakfast, lunch and refreshments.
The event was made even more special by the participation of youth volunteers from the MyBase program, who braved the cold Saturday morning to assist throughout the day. These young volunteers were fully engaged, serving food, creating bouquets, and helping with event setup and breakdown. Their dedication was a wonderful demonstration of intergenerational collaboration, as they worked side by side with seniors, reinforcing the importance of civic engagement and community service.
We were also honored to welcome Bloom Again Brooklyn, whose team led a hands-on floral arrangement workshop. The organization's founder, Caroline Gates Anderson, was in attendance, sharing her vision for repurposing flowers to bring joy to vulnerable populations. Bloom Again Brooklyn has made an extraordinary impact by diverting over 1.8 million flowers from the waste stream and creating 160,000+ floral arrangements for individuals in need, including homebound seniors, trauma survivors, and food pantry recipients. Their commitment to sustainability and community-building was truly inspiring.
This marks the second time that HSBA2 has been able to provide a Senior Health & Wellness Day through The Laundromat Project continued support of block associations and grassroots initiatives. We deeply appreciate their investment in strengthening community connections and fostering wellness among our senior residents.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ndelea Simama for leading the chair yoga session, to Bloom Again Brooklyn for their generosity, and to our incredible volunteers who made the day such a success. We look forward to continuing these meaningful collaborations and offering more enriching experiences for our seniors in the future.
