Rest In Peace Monette Sudler. Your Jazz Coalition commissioned piece ‘Stay Strong’ resonates deeply today. Thank you for your inspiration.

“Stay Strong” is my response to the ongoing injustices that African Americans have endured and continue to experience in America. While I’ve always used my music to express my feelings and highlight issues, the events of 2020 were particularly emotionally difficult for me and many in my community. I felt an urgency and a responsibility to continue to advocate for social justice after the shooting of Jacob Blake and the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Making a statement through my music was a natural way for me to process my feeling and these issues while raising awareness. Although it is an uncomplicated composition, it has had impact and offers encouragement and comfort. It was difficult waking each day to the news of another killing or shooting. “Stay Strong” is grounded in the strength of the guitar and is an anthem and affirmation, a reminder of our strength as a community and a message of hope. My composition is intended to offer an uplifting message to all my sisters and brothers; to tell them to keep shining. It is also a message about the importance of speaking up against social injustices.”

"Stay Strong" with Monnette Sudler-Honesty Composer/lyricist, guitars, bass, midi keyboard, spoken word and lead vocal. background vocals Miriam Suzette Ortiz and Romando Santos.
