I saw Rabble Rousers about 3 years ago & it was truly life changing for me & since then I’ve been working on a way to try to bring it to my community so we can all watch it together. It’s the incredible story of the 50 year fight for Cooper Square. When Robert Moses wanted to build right through their community the residents of Cooper Square said NO! And fought back! They fought like hell & WON! That fight birthed the Cooper Square Community Land Trust, the oldest CLT in NYC still in operation. They own & steward the land under 23 buildings in the Lower East Side in perpetuity. Their success was possible through decades of political organizing & support from the local government .

I’m so excited to be able to screen this for yall & want to thank , the Columbia St Waterfront Association (CSWA) & of course for graciously hosting. I really hope to everyone there!

Are you eager for a new model of community
development that prioritizes people over profit? Do you believe that neighbors coming together to make decisions should be the blueprint for shaping our communities?

Another way is possible, and proven with successful examples across New York City. Join us and our partners, the New Economy Project, for a timely presentation and discussion to learn about Community Controlled Housing. We will screen the critically acclaimed documentary Rabble Rousers, followed by a panel discussion on how we can implement these new models in our community.

speaking last night at her victory party & although the campaign fell short I’m still calling it a victory party because this campaign from the very beginning was an against all odds, people centered, grassroots, independent campaign & nowadays even running under those conditions is a victory in itself. Politics is nasty but Layla ran an uncompromising campaign, giving voice to the voiceless & made things like the center to the race where otherwise it would not have been. Last night we fell short but as Layla says, “the movement continues”. Later on in the evening Layla said to me, “the movement continues, I didn’t want to win for me, being in position of being a city council member was not about me, it was about our movement having more access to the levers of power but whether we’re inside or outside it doesn’t matter the movement continues & we will keep fighting”. She inspires so much. Every time I hear her talk, every time I’m around her & her supporters I’m inspired. That room last night was electrifying. I admit I lost a little more hope in our political system, & the things & people it rewards, the behind the scenes politics played even by people I respected is depressing but my belief in the movement is tenfold. Layla is right the movement continues; bigger & stronger than ever ✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

Love you Layla & love this movement!

Youth Against Displacement’s & anti-placement rally on April 7th. These young adults are amazing & have created a broad coalition that includes saving public housing StopFECDemolition & Save Section 9, no casinos, no mega jail in Chinatown & other causes, I love it! I often remind people, these causes are all related & part a of greater struggle for social justice & a more equitable New York (& the world in general) for all! To see housing, labor, etc all together was amazing! If we all get together there’s no stopping us! So I love that these kids are paving the way for us & working towards a future we all want to see. Revolutions are created by the youth, & that’s what we will need a REVOLUTION OF LOVE led by the energy & enthusiasm of the youth. Beautiful to have been there yesterday to see it in action! ❤️✊💪

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani Zohran Kwame Mamdani & Speaker Julie Menin please support

You know I had to ask him & he answered correctly. So has my vote. ✅

For the record: any housing plan that doesn’t start with preserving the affordable housing we already have is disingenuous. Period.
If you’re not talking about preservation first, passing **A, and bringing warehoused apartments back online, then you’re not serious about affordability. You’re just using “affordable housing” as cover to help developer donors cash out.

Preservation is the key.

Because what they’re approving right now? It’s not affordability. It’s $3,000+ “affordable” studios with income requirements of $120k–$280k.
That’s not affordablity.
That’s gaslighting.

And to be clear — I’m not against new development. If someone builds as-of-right with private money, charge whatever you want. Go wild.

What I’m against is rezonings + taxpayer subsidies + public land giveaways for luxury buildings with rooftop pools, yoga rooms, lounges, and “conference centers”… and in return we get a small handful of overpriced lottery units — mostly studios, useless for families.
That’s not a housing plan.
That’s a terrible business deal for the city.

We subsidize.
Developers profit.
Working families lose.

And then elected officials pretend they’re clean because they don’t take “real estate money,” while cashing checks from pro-housing PACs funded by the same industry. Come on. They know exactly where that money comes from.

There’s a lot of talk about “affordable housing.”
A lot of rezonings.
A lot of subsidies.
But very little deeply affordable, permanent housing actually getting built.

If it doesn’t start with preservation, it’s not about affordability.
It’s about profits.

Yesterday we had an Emergency Rally for COPA - The Community Opportunity to Purchase Act. It’s a bill aiming to keep NYers in New York! Too many lifelong NYers are getting pushed out of their city. COPA would not force landlords to sell their buildings it would simply give tenants & their non-profit partners a small window to try to purchase their building if & when the landlord decides to sell.

In my case I’ve done the math, I’ve lived in my apartment since my building opened in 1994. We’ve lived here for 31 years during this time we’ve had 2 landlords. The first landlord Related Companies paid $50k per unit, the second Irving Langer purchased the building in 2010 & paid $75k per unit, all told they’ve paid $125k for my apartment & little to no taxes due to the LIHTC (Lower Income Tax Credit) during this time I’ve paid over $300k in rent! How can you tell families like mine that we should not have an OPPORTUNITY to buy our building if or when our landlord plans to sell our building? We’ve already paid over twice what they paid for our building & own nothing & to add insult to injury now we’re at risk of being displaced so more affluent people can move in, where’s the fairness in that? The landlord was subsidized for 30 years why shouldn’t the tenants get this OPPORTUNITY just like they got an OPPORTUNITY through LIHTC when they bought our building?

COPA is about housing justice, it’s about empowering NYC tenants by keeping the most vulnerable NYers in their homes at a time when a record number of NYers are being displaced out of the city they love & helped build. We are not asking for a hand out just an OPPORTUNITY to remain in NYC, our home.

COPA is an incredibly popular bill. Over 150+ community organizations have signed on. It’s also very popular within the where until recently we had a super majority among City Council Members. We implore to finally bring COPA to the floor! 🙏

We want to thank & all the city council members that have sponsored & supported this bill! ❤️

Let’s finally & keep lifelong NYers in NY!!! 🙏
