Cognitive changes often occur following brain injury. These can include deficits in attention, memory, executive functioning (problem-solving, organization, decision-making), information processing, communication, mental flexibility, lack of awareness and more. Cognitive rehabilitation is often a prescribed treatment following brain injury.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
A traumatic brain injury occurs when an external force causes damage to the brain, leading to changes in brain function or brain pathology.

Common causes of TBI include:
• Falls
• Motor vehicle accidents
• Assaults
• Sports injuries

Non-Traumatic Brain Injury
Non-traumatic brain injuries happen due to internal factors within the body, such as:
• Stroke
• Lack of oxygen to the brain (drug overdose, heart attacks, carbon monoxide poisoning)
• Brain tumors
• Infections affecting the brain
• Exposure to toxins

At BBI, we work with all kinds of brain injuries, both traumatic and non. We recognize that each brain injury has a unique history and we strive to understand the individual needs of each person we support.

Beyond Brain Injury turned ONE this week! 🎉 We celebrated with our groups and shared in all of the joy and memories that got us here. We are so grateful for all of the people who have been a part of this journey with us. We look forward to seeing what we can accomplish in our second year!

A year ago today, BBI opened its doors to clients. We are so thankful for all of the support the MN brain Injury community has given us. It has been amazing to see the progress our clients make and to be a part of their journey overcoming challenges. Cheers to many more years of BBI!
