Bert Berube, a structural engineer who joined the General Services Administration in 1963, entered government service with an expectation of integrity and accountability. But for whistleblowing to be effective, there must be stronger protections in place. Many whistleblowers suffer career-ending repercussions because legal safeguards are often weak or ignored. Societal attitudes also need to shift—whistleblowers should be seen not as troublemakers but as guardians of accountability and transparency.

Bert Berube’s story is a stark reminder that integrity often comes at a cost. Yet, it is precisely individuals like him who push society toward greater accountability and reform. Supporting whistleblowers, strengthening protections, and demanding greater transparency in institutions are not just moral imperatives—they are essential to a functioning democracy.
