Congratulations to Gideon Slabaugh of UNFI, our April 2026 MTA Driver of the Month!

With 29 years behind the wheel and more than 3.1 million accident-free miles, Gideon exemplifies a commitment to safety and professionalism. He’s also a two-time first-place finisher in the five-axle division at the Minnesota Truck Driving Championships and an active community volunteer, serving as a minister and helping lead a homeless ministry in Minneapolis.

Thank you, Gideon, for your dedication to safe driving and making a difference both on and off the road!

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has released its 22nd annual Top Industry Issues report, highlighting the biggest challenges facing trucking.

Fuel Prices remain a top concern for both truck drivers and motor carriers, while other leading issues include lawsuit abuse reform, truck parking, driver compensation, insurance costs and availability, and the driver shortage.

A few key takeaways from this year’s report:
- Fuel Prices ranked No. 1 among drivers and No. 2 among motor carriers.

- Lawsuit Abuse Reform topped the list for motor carriers.

- The Economy dropped from No. 1 for three consecutive years to No. 6 overall, signaling cautious optimism among motor carriers as some positive signs emerge in the freight economy.

- Workforce challenges remain a priority, with driver shortage, retention and compensation all ranking among the industry's top concerns.

- AI in Trucking and Diesel Emissions Regulations remain on the top 10 list.

Nearly 3,100 trucking industry stakeholders participated in this year's survey, providing insight into the issues impacting the industry and where attention is needed moving forward.

Yesterday, more than 30 attendees joined the Minnesota Trucking Association’s Women’s Trucking Leadership Council (WTLC), both in person and virtually, for an engaging conversation on leadership.

Kari Rihm, Chair of the Board and Dealer Principal of Rihm Family Companies, shared insights on building your leadership presence and making an impact as a leader.

Building the next generation of trucking starts with engaging students early!

On October 7, MTA member Foltz Trucking participated in the 8th Annual Detroit Lakes Career Expo, where Ken Foltz and Gregg Pekas showcased the wide range of career opportunities available in the industry.

Through partnerships like this and the use of the MTA's Youth Engagement Toolkit, Foltz Trucking is helping introduce students to the many rewarding career paths in trucking.
