Today, CAPI honors the history, resilience, and rich cultures of Indigenous communities in Minnesota. The name Minnesota comes from the Dakota phrase Mni Sóta Maḳoce, often translated as “The Land Where the Waters Reflect the Clouds.” This land holds thousands of years of ancestral history and remains the homeland of diverse Indigenous peoples.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrations are taking place across the Twin Cities and beyond. Explore these upcoming events, compiled by MPR, to learn, connect, and celebrate Indigenous cultures and communities.:

12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Battle Creek Regional Park and Recreation Center
Indigenous Peoples Weekend continues into Monday’s celebrations with a Native American Food Truck Festival, featuring several Native-owned food truck vendors. An art market and various activities will be held at the park throughout the day.
