We are excited to share that Steps to Success has been selected as one of 150 non-profits to receive funding through Cummings Foundation's annual grant program! Over the next three years, Steps will receive $150,000 in unrestricted funding to strengthen our programs and further our mission of building pathways to success for over 350 Brookline students from low-income families.

We are honored to have been selected from a record 959 applicants this year and proud to be one of the few Brookline-based organizations to have ever received a Cummings Foundation grant. Thank you to Cummings Foundation for investing in our students, families, and community!

Last week, Steps welcomed students to the Work Connections program with an orientation event connecting interns with their supervisors and preparing them for the summer months ahead. Beginning in July, almost 40 students will begin internships at 15 organizations across Brookline and Greater Boston. Through these workplace experiences and weekly workshops, our Work Connections interns will explore prospective career paths, strengthen their resumes, develop workplace skills, and build confidence as they prepare for their post-secondary lives and long-term goals.

Last Wednesday, in partnership with the Public Schools of Brookline’s Library Department, Steps hosted our annual Scoops and Reads event. We brought over 70 students from across the district together for an afternoon filled with books, creativity, and joy. In addition to designing their own tote bags and enjoying pizza and ice cream, students had the opportunity to pick from a variety of summer reading books, with some grabbing entire book series and collections! Scoops and Reads continues to be a favorite end-of-year tradition, bringing our elementary and middle school community together to celebrate reading and create lasting memories together.

Over April break, the Steps high school team brought students on college visits to Boston College, Clark University, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Northeastern University, Simmons University, and Wentworth Institute of Technology! The trips included student-led tours, information sessions providing an overview of what each school has to offer, and visits to a dining hall to allow students the chance to imagine their lives on campus. The following week, the team brought a group of students to the annual NACAC college fair, an event in which hundreds of college and university representatives speak to students about their respective institutions. Brookline High School freshman, sophomores, and juniors attended these trips, in line with Steps’ goal of exposing students to post-secondary opportunities early in their high school careers. Opportunities like these allow students to envision themselves in college environments, explore the opportunities available to them, and start planning for their own college admission cycle.

Steps made the most of school vacation week by hosting engaging programming for our elementary and middle school students from across Brookline. On Tuesday, we brought students to Boston Bowl, where friendly competition and impressive skills led many students to scoring over 100. On Wednesday, we held our annual trip to Roller World, an opportunity for many students to skate for the first time, building confidence and resilience with plenty of laughs along the way. These experiences continue to strengthen our community, fostering connection, support, and growth beyond the classroom.

Earlier this month, 33 After Hours University (AHU) students and staff took advantage of an early-release day by taking a field trip to the Museum of Science! Students and instructors rode the Green Line into Boston and met with educators in the museum’s Theater of Electricity, where they were led through hands-on static electricity demonstrations. Afterward, students explored exhibits like the dinosaur models, space and engineering displays, and interactive science activities, making memories with their AHU peers along the way.

Experiences like these help students build community across schools and program sites, while also sparking curiosity and joy in STEM learning. We are grateful to our partners at the Museum of Science, Boston for making this trip possible!

Thank you for making Step Up Celebration 2026 an evening of joy and inspiration! We gathered in honor of 25 years of dreams and persistence, of young people finding themselves, and a community of supporters showing up for them time and time again. There’s still time to support the Step Up Paddle Raise through April 22 and be a part of celebrating our 25th anniversary (bit.ly/paddle2026)!

From the premiere of “A Legacy of Steps,” featuring alumni voices across generations, to hearing from Tarrus, our student speaker, the night was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when students are supported and encouraged to pursue their dreams. We were also thrilled to announce the public phase of our $2 million Next Steps Campaign, which will help Steps expand opportunities, deepen impact, and support even more students in the years ahead.

We hope you’ll stay connected to our work, share our mission and the achievements of our students, and continue to invest in the potential of the young people we serve. Thank you for being part of the Steps community.

With our Step Up Celebration just three days away, now is the moment to make your impact (bit.ly/suc2026). Every ticket purchased, raffle entry bought, auction bid placed, and gift made helps ensure that Brookline students from low-income families have the opportunities and support they need to thrive.

Together, we can build a more equitable Brookline. Will you step up for our students today?

We’re so grateful to the many donors who have already stepped up and had their gifts doubled through the $10,000 matching fund sponsored by our Board of Directors. Give today, while matching funds are still available, to unlock even greater opportunities for our students.

“[In AHU and TA] I learned how to be independent. I get to do my homework there. We get to do projects, like getting to use a camera to take photos, even though they’re expensive. I like getting to see our pictures and to see…”

Steps to Success closes the opportunity gap for Brookline students from low-income families, strengthening academic and social-emotional skills, opening college and career pathways, and anchoring students in a powerful sense of community.
