On Wednesday, the College Success Initiative (CSI) team hosted Financial Planning Night, a workshop for Brookline High School (BHS) seniors and their families to learn more about the college financial aid process. The CSI team presented an overview of aid types, including grants, scholarships, and loans. They discussed the importance of building a balanced school list and researching financially accessible schools, provided information about securing BHS and outside scholarships, and introduced the FAFSA and CSS Profile, which are used to determine eligibility for federal, state, and college-based aid.

Financial Planning Night was piloted in 2024 to ensure that our students and families enter the college application process empowered with the tools and knowledge they need to make informed financial decisions. Now in its third year, the workshop has become the starting point of our work to demystify financial aid and guide our BHS seniors through the steps of securing an affordable college education. In two weeks, the CSI team will follow up with FAFSA Night, which will provide hands-on support to students and families in completing and submitting their FAFSA forms.

Last week marked the start of our after-school programs, After Hours University (AHU) and Teen Advantage (TA), for the 2026-2027 school year! Serving 87 elementary and middle school students at sites across Brookline, AHU and TA are cornerstones of our educational equity work and holistic approach to student support. Combining direct academic tutoring, a social-emotional learning curriculum, and exposure to a wide range of STEM and arts topics, these programs ensure that our students have access to high-quality learning opportunities outside of school hours. Over the past two weeks, our instructors have also focused on making sure every student feels welcome to build the foundations of a strong classroom community. On Saturday, September 12, the Steps Alumni Association and Parent & Caregiver Council hosted a back to school picnic at Emerson Park!

Bringing together over 50 students, parents & caregivers, alumni, staff, and school partners, the event was the culmination of months of planning and outreach by the Association and Council. The picnic kicked off with food and facepainting, provided by our high school volunteers. Families also had the chance to enter a prize raffle, as well as to bring home free school supplies. Steps parent and musician Ruthmar Boyer contributed with a performance of songs in both English and French, including a sing-a-long for all ages. Alumni then led several games, including potato sack racing and kickball, which saw the student team beating the adult team 7 to 1.

A special thank you to Brookline Booksmith, Junbi Brookline, Roche Bros. Supermarkets, and Wegmans for helping make this event possible through their generous donations. We hope that everyone’s school year is off to a great start!

Our Stepping Back to School campaign begins tomorrow! Over the next week, 5 local restaurants will help raise funds for Steps to Success through a generous donation of a portion of their sales. We hope you’ll join us as we dine our way across Brookline, supporting local businesses and helping our programs start the school year strong.

Not able to join in person at any of the business-led fundraisers? There are still ways to support us this back-to-school season!

Pickup and delivery online orders from all restaurants will be counted towards the fundraising total. You can also share the fundraisers, buy online gift cards from Michael's Deli, Mamaleh's Delicatessen, or Rifrullo Cafe during their fundraising periods, or make a direct donation (bit.ly/stsdonation) to help us celebrate the start of the school year.

As the summer comes to a close, we would like to once again acknowledge and thank our amazing camp partners. This summer, through collaboration with both day and overnight programs, Steps made it possible for our students to attend a combined 214 weeks of camp – all at no cost to their families.

Ensuring access to enriching summer experiences is a key part of our mission, allowing our students to broaden their horizons, make new connections, and build skills, confidence, and independence. Thank you Beaver Summer Camp, Boston University - U-Design, Brantwood Camp, Brookline Arts Center , Brookline Recreation , Camp Becket/Chimney Corners Camp, Brantwood Camp , Camp Nebagamon , SmartSummers, Summer at Park (at The Park School), and Viking Sports for your partnership in closing the opportunity gap!
