As the summer comes to a close, we would like to once again acknowledge and thank our amazing camp partners. This summer, through collaboration with both day and overnight programs, Steps made it possible for our students to attend a combined 214 weeks of camp – all at no cost to their families.

Ensuring access to enriching summer experiences is a key part of our mission, allowing our students to broaden their horizons, make new connections, and build skills, confidence, and independence. Thank you Beaver Summer Camp, Boston University - U-Design, Brantwood Camp, Brookline Arts Center , Brookline Recreation , Camp Becket/Chimney Corners Camp, Brantwood Camp , Camp Nebagamon , SmartSummers, Summer at Park (at The Park School), and Viking Sports for your partnership in closing the opportunity gap!

This summer, 35 Work Connections students gained hands-on experience through internships across 14 partner sites spanning government, education, healthcare, and community organizations. Alongside their internships, students participated in weekly career development sessions focused on resume-building, mock interviews, networking, and workplace professionalism, with an additional session on financial literacy led by our community partner, MassHire. Together, these experiences helped students build workplace skills, grow their professional networks, and explore the many career pathways available to them after high school.

Last Friday, we celebrated the end of the Work Connections program with a culminating ceremony, in which students were honored with certificates of program completion. We are so proud of our student interns, not only for their hard work but also for how they represented themselves and Steps to the broader Brookline community this summer.

A tremendous thank you to Artbarn Community Theater, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brookline Council on Aging (Brookline Senior Center), Brookline Early Education Program, Public Schools of Brookline, Brookline High School - Copy Center, Brookline Interactive Group, Brookline Recreation, Brookline Teen Center, Brookline Office of the Town Clerk, The Country Club, and Puppet Showplace Theater for your partnership.

Last Tuesday, in celebration of the end of summer programming, we brought 28 students and family members on an Outdoor Explorations trip to George’s Island! We arrived on the island by ferry from Boston Harbor and spent the first part of the trip learning about the rich history of George’s Island, then shared lunch before setting off to explore the island. Students and families shared how much they loved getting a break from the city, breathing in the fresh air, and enjoying the amazing breeze by the water.

Steps’ Outdoor Explorations programs expand our students’ worldview through meaningful outdoor opportunities, inspiring growth and confidence. By inviting family members to join trips such as these, we create shared experiences that strengthen our community and deepen our families’ connection to our programs.

Last Friday, as a part of its goal to introduce students to a wide variety of career pathways, the Work Connections program brought 28 interns on a special visit to SharkNinja. During the trip, students got an inside look at the process of bringing new products to life, from initial ideation to engineering, testing, and marketing. Through a rotation of hands-on activities, they met with engineers and other SharkNinja team members, learned about their roles, and discovered both traditional and less linear career pathways within a global company. A tremendous thank you to our partners at SharkNinja for opening your doors and making our trip possible!

We wrapped up July by celebrating the end of the 2026 Summer Connections program with ice cream, cake, and a showcase of the multimedia projects our students completed throughout the summer! Students were recognized with certificates of program completion and had the opportunity to share the posters, dynamic infographics, and advocacy videos on social topics they care about with the family and community members in attendance.

Summer Connections combines a multimedia communications curriculum with externships at sites including the Brookline Teen Center, Public Library of Brookline , Project Discovery, and Smart Summers, all in support of building career-ready skills in our middle school students. We are grateful to our partner and our summer staff and so proud of our students for their hard work throughout the program.

Each year, Steps to Success partners with day and overnight camps to provide our students with summer experiences that foster skill development, build community, and create lasting memories. This summer, our students are engaging in theater arts with Smart Summers, hands-on engineering projects with BU U-Design, creative pursuits with Brookline Arts Center, athletic activities with Viking Sports, and outdoor adventures with Beaver Summer Camp, Summer at Park (at The Park School), and Brookline Recreation. Beyond Brookline, our students are exploring the forests of New England through overnight programs at Brantwood Camp and Camp Becket/Chimney Corners Camp, while a group of students has also traveled to Wisconsin for a month-long experience with Camp Nebagamon.

We are so thankful to our camp partners for providing these amazing opportunities and to our families for their trust and collaboration, as we work to make summer a season of continued learning and exploration.

Summer Connections is officially underway for Steps’ rising 8th and 9th grade students! Over the next four weeks, our students will gain hands-on experience through morning externships with community partners, including the Brookline Teen Center, Public Library of Brookline, Project Discovery, and Smart Summers. In the afternoons, they will come together for career readiness workshops and design-based projects that build on what they're experiencing in the workplace. We are excited to see our students grow as they explore new interests, build meaningful connections, and develop career skills that will serve them in high school, college, and beyond.

Last Wednesday, the College Success Initiative (CSI) held its annual College 101 Workshop. Recent high school graduates entering the program were introduced to their new advisors, learned more about their BHS scholarships, scheduled their initial summer meetings, and received important information to help them prepare for the fall semester. This year’s workshop featured a dynamic panel of CSI alumni and a current CSI student, all of whom shared stories from their own college experiences. Panelists emphasized the importance of being present and responsible, building relationships with professors, getting involved on campus, and finding a supportive community. They also candidly discussed challenges they overcame along the way, including roommate conflicts, financial aid complications, and academic struggles.

College 101 marks the beginning of each student’s journey with the College Success Initiative, and the workshop is designed to provide the guidance, resources, and community students need to feel confident as they navigate their transition to college!
