Two chances coming up in August to enjoy some time in the community garden! First up on Aug 15th, come let the garden inspire your artistic ability. Then on August 26, join us for the 4th book club in our food and climate justice themed book series. In partnership with the Friend Memorial Public Library and the Brooklin Climate Response Committee, we will be reading and discussing Sam Kass’s The Last Supper: How to Overcome the Coming Food Crisis. We will meet in the garden at 1pm. Come a little earlier or stay a little late to walk around and ask questions about what we do in this community space. Feel free to bring a dish inspired by the book if you’d like.

Congratulations Healthy Peninsula! We love being able to donate a little from the community garden each week to the Magic Food Bus program. Brooklin’s pickup is on Friday mornings on the lawn of the Friend Memorial Public Library, right after weekly storytime!

Thank you to all who came out to celebrate and learn about traditional Indigenous foods of Maine that are just as culturally significant and relevant today. Chef Joe Robbin’s food inspired and wowed us. We can not thank him enough for sharing his knowledge and talents with us. Thank you again this year to Carding Brook Farm for welcoming us to gather on their beautiful farm and to BAMU for the wonderful entertainment. We love collaborating with the Brooklin Climate Response Committee and the Friend Memorial Public Library on events that bring so many folks (over 70 this year!) together. The answer to so many of the world’s problems is to simply build a bigger table, and this community is really good at it! And congratulations to this year’s local food dishes, featuring indigenous ingredients: blistered milkweed pods and moose stew!

A MOFGA Certified Organic family farm spanning the towns of Blue Hill and Penobscot, owned and operated by Mark and Renata, with help from their daughter Julia.

Blue-Zee Farm has been lovingly restoring their historic farm since 2007. Through careful stewardship of the land and a commitment to time-honored organic farming practices, they grow healthy, delicious food while protecting the environment for future generations.

Blue-Zee Farm offers a variety of seasonal organic vegetables along with frozen blueberries grown right on the farm.

Our third annual local food potluck is coming up on July 25th! This year, the partnership with the Brooklin Climate Response Committee has expanded to include the Friend Memorial Public Library and builds off this year’s food and climate justice-themed book club series. We are thrilled to be hosting Penobscot Nation Chef Joe Robbins as he presents a cooking demonstration and also talks about the importance and relevance of Indigenous foods. For this year’s local food challenge, we are encouraging folks to include traditional indigenous food to the northeast in their recipes. Where would you find information about that, you ask?? We have set up a mini scavenger hunt of sorts in the library to help you learn more… there are 17 ingredients in total featured throughout the library! We used the amazing resources from Native American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NĀTIFSorg), which is a great place to start on your learning journey. We will also have recipe cards at our table at the Brooklin Farmers Market on Thursdays. All are welcome to come feast and learn with us at Carding Brook Farm (thanks Jen and Jon for hosting again!) on July 25th, starting at 4:30pm. And thank you to BAMU for providing music again. We’re getting ready for some workshops in the garden for this fall! We received excellent assistance from the Brooklin School’s pre-K/K class the last week of school in planting black beans for both drying and seed saving. It’s easy and fun and there are still black bean seeds in the Seed Library at the Friend Memorial Public Library to snag! Plant before the 4th of July and you’ll have beans for chili and tacos all winter long. Look for our bean thrashing and winnowing workshop coming up this fall!
