What a great opening day for the Brooklin Farmers Market yesterday! New faces and friendly, familiar faces all around. And…It was the launch of our new Veggie Vouchers program! Each Brooklin School student gets $5 worth of vouchers to spend each week at the market on produce, veggie seedlings, meat and eggs. This program has been made possible from a very generous donation from a Brooklin resident. All the students came yesterday to practice using their first week of vouchers and had a blast. What a way to start the season!

Annual Seedling Swap Tomorrow! The Brooklin School students got a sneak peak of all the plants and got to select one to take home to their own gardens. We’ve still got lots of tomatoes, onions, shallots, kale, basil, broccoli and whatever your neighbors come to swap with you! No plants, don’t worry… we’ve got plenty! And back by popular demand, more green crab meal fertilizer with a new liquid version, too. Thanks, The Green Kraken, for helping to remediate damage done by this invasive species while feeding our gardens! Saturday, May 23 from 10-12 on the lawn of the Friend Memorial Public Library.

Our Annual Seeding Swap is coming up on May 23rd! Have so many seedlings you need to share? Great! Want to swap out some varieties that you have grown with some that your neighbors have? Fabulous! Just need some plants? Wonderful! The Brooklin School 5th and 6th graders have been starting up all kinds of seeds so we have plenty to share…even started planting some in the community garden! All left over seedlings will be donated to local food pantries. Come see us on the lawn of the Friend Memorial Public Library from 10am-12pm next Saturday!

What a great day yesterday getting Maine-made soil amendments out into the community to feed our gardens which feed us all! We learned from Green Kraken all about how he harvests the invasive green crab and turns into an amazing fertilizer for our gardens… all harvested off the Downeast coast. Lots of folks went home with this new source of all-local fertilizer and we will have it for sale again at the Seedling Swap on May 23. Also, we sold about 7 yards of Chickadee Compost in under 4 hours which is made from food scraps from all over the peninsula. The rest of the compost is now self-serve. $5/5 gallon bucket. Come fill up your own buckets or grab a pre-filled bag. There is a place for you to leave your payment. Happy Growing!

No book club today!!

Unfortunately there is still a lingering smell from the insulation work we had done on the basement yesterday, so we will not have our book group discussion at one today. If folks are interested, we would be happy to reschedule. See you all at four for the groundbreaking ceremony!
