Position Title: Conservation Technician – Summer Position

Salary: $12 hour
Location: Day County Conservation District, Webster, South Dakota
Dates of employment: May 11 – August 28, 2015 (maximum 16 weeks)
Qualifications:
Applicant must be pursuing a degree in one of the following fields; environmental science, soil science, range management, agronomy, ecology, wildlife and fisheries management or limnology.
Much of the employee’s duties are located outside on farm/ranch sites, and on or along lake and streams. The job involves walking over rough terrain, wading in lakes and streams, riding in boats, lifting, hauling, and stretching. Work may involve exposure to livestock, heavy farm and construction machinery.
Employee must possess a valid driver's license. Due to the fact the Day County Conservation District office is located in a federally operated building and employees may come into contact with information deemed sensitive, all District employees are required to complete a security training course and are required to undergo a background check.
Duties:
The Northeast Glacial Lakes Watershed Improvement and Protection Project is a multi-year project designed to restore and protect the water quality of lakes located in Day, Grant, Marshall, and Roberts’s counties of northeast South Dakota. The Conservation Technician will be employed by the Day County Conservation District Board of Supervisors, and will be under the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator who will be responsible for establishing general work priorities and instructions to the employee on work assignments. NRCS staff may oversee the Technicians work with USDA funded programs such as EQIP and CRP.
Duties of the Conservation Technician will include:
Assist Resource Technician in working with agricultural producers to design, install and maintain conservation practices and programs.
Assist in collecting monthly water quality samples and field data from project lakes; bi-weekly water quality samples, field data, and stage and flow data from project streams; study resource conditions including range, riparian areas, and cropland; collect and map watershed land use and economic data to evaluate the impact of applied conservation measures and/or the necessity of further conservation measures.
Assist with the implementation of project specific information and education programs to local individuals, lake associations, news media outlets, and schools; and assist with partner information and education programs to foster an awareness of the projects goals and promote conservation in general. Completion of the Projects Lake and Stream Ecology Workshop held mid-July can earn applicants in a graduate or undergraduate program one hour of credit.
