“Perhaps the most mysterious and miraculous aspect of the Rosary Sonatas is the extensive use of scordatura, or altering the tuning of the strings to create pitches that are different from the notes written on the page...In this respect, Biber explored the limits of the violin in a way no one before or since has done. Although the scordatura tuning is not always audible to the listener, the effect…changes the character of the violin to create a sonic marvel reflecting these contemplative mysteries.”

“As captivated as I am by the music I hear, create or imagine, I am also aware that the voices that emerge from the works of musicians such as Bach and Biber are not separated from us by centuries, but connected to us by our shared humanity. As a musician, to play this music is to be the medium that channels their intentions, and to know how to allow your voice to express that connection in the present moment.“

🎉Happy Birthday, J.S. Bach! …Or should we say, Happy Birthdays? 🤔

Born on March 21, 1685, Bach’s birthdate was recorded using the Julian calendar, which was still in use in much of Germany at the time. But if we adjust for the modern Gregorian calendar, his birthday actually falls on March 31. 🤯

So why not celebrate twice? Double the cake, double the fugues, double the fun! 🎂

What’s your favorite Bach piece? Drop a 🎶 in the comments!

The reputation of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber as the greatest violin virtuoso of his time has survived safely tucked away in the annals of music history texts. Some, including Paul Hindemith, even considered Biber to be the Baroque era's greatest composer before Bach.

But for over 200 years, much of this composer's music (in particular the Rosankrantz Sonaten) had been lost to our ears. That is, until the publication in 1898 of the Biber volumes, edited by musicologist Guido Adler (as part of the historical series: Monuments of Music in Austria [DTÖ]) brought this collection of sonatas to life again.

Come see our next Bach/Biber Presentation during the Bach Month of March!
