“Cancer survivor” carries a different meaning for everyone. For some, it means healing. For others, it means resilience, gratitude and strength. 🫶💪

This National Cancer Survivors Day, we asked survivors to share what survivorship means to them, and their answers are reminders of the courage behind every cancer journey.

At Ascension Wisconsin Foundation, we are proud to support compassionate cancer care, innovative programs and services that help patients and families through every stage of treatment, recovery and survivorship.

In the emergency room, moments can change in an instant. During some of life’s most stressful and uncertain situations, compassionate caregivers help bring hope and healing when patients need it most. 💙

Today, we are proud to recognize Dr. Matthew Lochen and Registered Nurse Bernie Loether of Ascension NE Wisconsin - Mercy Campus as Guardian Angels! Through the Guardian Angel program, grateful patients and loved ones have the opportunity to honor the caregivers who made a meaningful difference during their care journey.

In recognition of Dr. Lochen and Bernie, a patient shared:

"Dr. Lochen and RN Bernie are such assets to the ER. They were very caring and understanding and made me feel like I was important, event hough they were busy. If not for Dr. Lochen, I would be getting antibiotics I didn't need."

Please join us in celebrating Dr. Lochen and Bernie for the compassionate care they provide to patients every day! 💙✨Learn more about Guardian Angel at giveAWF.org/guardian-angel.

As Mental🧠 Health Awareness Month comes to a close, it’s important to remember that mental health matters every month of the year. Seeking support for mental health symptoms is just as important as seeking care for physical health concerns.
After years of searching for answers and support, Amy found moments of calm, clarity and hope through compassionate mental health care.

“I felt a change really, truly, from the very first meeting with Sue. It took regular visits over the next year to make new habits and break old nervous habits while learning to cope with what I was experiencing.” - Amy

At Ascension Wisconsin Foundation, we are proud to support programs, services and compassionate care that help expand access to mental health resources and strengthen the well-being of our communities.

What if the solution to finally helping treatment resistant-depression isn't medication?

For Mary, living with depression meant searching for something that would truly make a difference. Through Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy, she found a new path, one that brought relief, resilience and the ability to keep going.

Her story is a reminder that progress can look different for everyone, and that new possibilities for healing exist. Support from generous donors and grant funding through Ascension Wisconsin Foundation helps make TMS therapy more accessible to those who need it.

Read Mary’s story and see how TMS therapy is helping patients persevere:

At 62 years old, Mary has a lot to be grateful for: A beautiful family, supportive friends, a meaningful, 38 year career as a CNA and memories from a recent trip to North Carolina she will cherish forever. But Mary has also experienced her own set of challenges. For the past 25 years, Mary has lived...

✨ May is Women's Health Month.✨ Recently, we spoke with Oncology Nurse Practitioner Deanna Birling of Ascension Wisconsin about how cancer treatment can affect women's sexual health, including the pelvic floor.

Listen to what she had to say and learn about resources to improve issues that may arise. Much of the cancer care provided throughout Ascension Wisconsin is made possible in part by donor generosity and grants to Ascension Wisconsin Foundation.

Mental health journeys are rarely a straight path and healing often begins with a single step forward.

This Mental 🧠 Health Month, we’re sharing Emma’s story about diagnosis, finding support at Ascension All Saints Hospital and building something stronger on the other side. It’s a powerful reminder that access to compassionate, personalized care can change the trajectory of someone’s life.

At Ascension Wisconsin, that care is made possible through programs supported by generous donors to the Ascension Wisconsin Foundation, helping expand access to mental health resources for those who need it most.

Read Emma’s story:

In August 2021, Emma wanted to be anywhere but Melanie Buchaklian’s office. She had just spent a week in the hospital after attempting su***de, and had already gone through years of therapists and medications. She felt as if nothing worked. On that August day, she sat in Melanie’s office at Ascens...

Ascension Wisconsin doctors, nurse practitioners and other caregivers show up for patients in many ways beyond administering treatment. They listen, advocate and meet people where they are, based on each person’s individual needs.

💙✨ Today, we are proud to recognize Family Medicine Nurse Practitioner Katlyn Malone of Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Bay View as a Guardian Angel for the compassionate, personalized care she provides.💙✨

In recognition of Katlyn, a grateful patient shared:

“I’m in my mid-40s now, and besides all of the stress and my mental health, I was having nerve issues in my neck, which was causing pain all over my body for years. Some days I couldn’t even move. Katlyn really took the time to hear me out on my issues. She could tell I was pill seeking and that I needed help because she understood the mental health issues. She ordered all of my scans and helped with anxiety medication so I could stay still in the machine. With that, she was able to get me set up with my neurosurgeon.

I took a gamble on Katlyn after my doctor left and my pain doctor retired. During my first appointment, I told her of my friends who died of addiction and told her I didn’t want painkillers. When I eventually asked for some, she reminded me of what I said and gave me a medication that helped with my mental health. My entire experience with her has been incredible, even down to the messaging in MyChart and with doing disability paperwork. Katlyn is one of the best health providers I’ve ever had.”

Please join us in celebrating Katlyn for the thoughtful care she brings to the patients she serves. 💙✨Learn more about Guardian Angel at giveAWF.org/guardian-angel.
