Background & History:
• Graduated high school and went into military.
• Worked at a small security consulting firm and began volunteering with at-risk youth and soup kitchens.
• Went into ministry with wife and children - sold business, home, car.
• As a result of having too many volunteers at Despensa de la Paz Pantry, 3 individuals asked themselves what more could they do in the community.
• Started Street Life in 2001 as a gang rescue. Goal: Our primary goal is to establish and build relationships with runaway, homeless & street-dependent youth and adults. Many develop addictions, go to prison or die. Through supportive relationships, we help those in need with an end goal that they will become independent, self-sufficient, contributing members of society. To Summarize What We Do:

• Befriend homeless youth and adults, letting them know that there are others who are concerned about their well-being and want to see them safe and successful
• Provide food, clothing, hygiene products, blankets, and other comfort items
• Provide vital information regarding available resources to meet their needs, including housing, education, employment, medical, mental health and other support services
• Offer counseling and support to address the risks associated with street life

StreetLife Communities - October 7-8, 2026

One person in the front seat watches down the sidewalk to the right, the driver scans to the left looking for community members in need of support or assistance. We’re also scanning for trouble. There’s plenty of that out here, too. Sometimes we see a lot of people all at once. Tonight, though, we stopped for smaller groups and individuals. People were hungry. And people were needing some hope.

We saw a lot of new faces, newly homeless…a lot of them young men in their twenties with no idea of how to be homeless. A lot of posturing, but glimpses of fear poking out when their guard came down as they entered the relative “safer” space around our vans.

No questions are asked. No advice given. Unsolicited advice is criticism. Always. And we aren’t the ones facing the predators and vagaries that homelessness visits on the vulnerable no matter how tough they appear to be.

I saw an old friend at our very last stop. He wasn’t actually outside, just sitting with a friend in dire circumstances. When I last saw him, it was he who was in dire circumstances struggling with an opioid addiction that was ravaging him and his wife. It has been a couple of years since I last saw him, and seeing him doing well was a boost to our spirits. There was light in his eyes…eyes that have seen a lot of terrible things. There’s good news out here too. People get better. People do better. This is our community.
