At HVA, building connections is at the heart of what we do, both across ecological landscapes and human communities.

Last week, we were thrilled to be able to do this through the Litchfield Hills Greenprint Collaborative! We teamed up with our friends at Kent Land Trust to host a hike for summer interns across the Greenprint geography. Interns from six different conservation organizations set out for an afternoon on the trails at Kent Land Trust's Skiff Mountain South Preserve. It was incredible to see the community that was built over the course of the hike and lunch!

We are so proud to support these emerging conservation leaders as they grow their professional roots. We know great things are coming from them, not only this summer as they work in the Litchfield Hills, but beyond as they begin their careers in the field.

Meet Amanda, HVA's new environmental education coordinator!

Amanda brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from working in watershed education efforts in Colorado and in Dutchess County, New York, and this summer, she'll support our longstanding initiatives, including the Still River Watershed Connections program in Danbury and our highly impactful River Stewards of Tomorrow internship program. Education is central to HVA’s work and mission, and our team is excited for this opportunity to enhance the scope and impact of that effort.

She will also lead several free outdoor adventures on the Housatonic River and in its tributary watersheds throughout the year. We hope you will have the opportunity to meet Amanda on an HVA paddle this summer! Stay tuned for upcoming event announcements here: https://hvatoday.org/welcome-to-celebrate-our-watershed-with-hva/

Join us on Saturday, June 27, from 9 AM to 12 PM, for our first Housatonic River Cleanup of the season! Meet at Riverway Park in Pittsfield at 9 AM to help gather trash from the river and its banks.

Free lunch will be provided for volunteers after the cleanup. Make sure to register beforehand to let us know if you have any dietary restrictions! 🍕🥬

Thank you to The Lantern Inn for hosting an incredible Dine Out for a Cause event on Friday! We are so grateful for their support as we work to protect nearby Wassaic Creek, which flows into the Ten Mile River and, ultimately, the Housatonic and Long Island Sound. We appreciate all who came out and enjoyed a delicious pizza!

Did you know that .deep and offer free fishing programs throughout Connecticut?

We had a great time at the Fish with CARE event at Brookfield Town Beach, right on Candlewood Lake! A part of the Housatonic River watershed, HVA is working to make sure native fish species in Candlewood and other parts of the watershed system have the habitat and conditions they need to survive and thrive. Connect with your local water bodies and practice your fishing skills by checking out Fish with CARE’s upcoming events this summer!

Happy World Environment Day to the Housatonic River — the lifeline of our beautiful region! From the tiniest minnow to the bald eagles, bears, and bobcats, we are so grateful to the species that share this world with us.

Protecting our natural resources and ecosystems is more important than ever. We hope you will join us in ensuring that the waters and open spaces of the Housatonic Valley are safeguarded for generations to come.
