Stop the Brookfield CT Compressor Station

Stop the Brookfield CT Compressor Station Organizing to stop the expansion of a toxic fracked-gas compressor station in Brookfield, CT

01/08/2026

DEEP will hold a virtual public hearing on the controversial plan to expand the natural gas compressor station on Jan. 8.

01/06/2026

Please consider making a public comment on January 8 or a written comment up until January 15.

Note the Talking Points:
Brookfield deserves an adjudicatory hearing, not just a public hearing. An adjudicatory hearing is necessary to address the serious air quality issues that are inherent with burning more methane at the Brookfield Compressor Station;

Brookfield (and all of Fairfield County) is in a severe ozone nonattainment zone; DEEP must not add more pollution;

Providing for a healthy environment is part of DEEP’s mission. This permit exposes vulnerable populations to health harming pollution;

DEEP is failing to follow best available technology requirement to achieve lower emissions, and must improve monitoring and enforcement;

This project will put added pressure on an aging pipeline that was built in blatant disregard for public safety;

Additional greenhouse gas emissions from the facility will impede DEEP’s mandate to achieve the state’s climate law requiring emission reductions.

Tell Dunn and the Board of Selectman to Appeal - NO LATER THAN NOV. 4

CT DEEP Recieved nearly TWO HUNDRED opposition comments and 3 seperate petitions for an adjudactory hearing yet has decided to ignore the public and proceed with polluting Brookfield’s children.

Despite a hugely successful push by the town to collect signatures (thank you FS Dunn and BOS!), DEEP decided that the petition was ‘procedurally defective’ and thus ignored every argument the town made.

DEEP headfaked the public (including the town) instructing petitioners with one thing on their website (which the town did) and requiring another in their petition evaluation. This is absolutely grounds for appeal and that is available to the town.

Write to Dunn and te BOS with something as simple as the following:

”First Selectman (and candidate) Dunn and BOS (candidates),

Thank you for filing the petition with the state. I am shocked that DEEP would do this to the public and want to see the town follow through with an appeal to reverse the procedural rejection of the towns petition so we can successfully stop this project from harming our town.

I urge you to FILE AN APPEAL, and before the November 4 deadline.

Thank you”

Wonder what's emanating from the Iroquois compressor station on High Meadow? The particulates, toxic chemicals, methane, etc, while not visible to the naked eye, IS visible through special photographic equipment. Physicians for Social Responsibility filmed the compressor station demonstrating the magnitude of the emissions. Check it out and please contact our representatives Hartford, Senator Harding and Delegate Foncello. Let them know that this is completely unacceptable for Brookfield or any town.

Our petition for an adjudicatory hearing was denied by DEEP. This means that the compressor station expansion can go forward. Contact town leadership. Steve Dunn and the BOS. Tell them we must appeal that decision.

It's zero hour. PLEASE comment to oppose the Brookfield Compressor Station Expansion. The expansion will harm not only Brookfield. Take a few minutes. Numbers count.

This is a reminder that Connecticut DEEP is accepting public comments on its tentative decision to issue permits to expand the Brookfield compressor station. Comments are due on September 16 by 5 pm to [email protected]. Send a message here. Or write your own using our comment guide. If you've sent comments already, thank you!

If approved, the Brookfield compressor station will double the turbines at the facility and push an additional 125 million cubic feet of methane gas per day through the pipeline. Here are some of the critical reasons that DEEP should not permit this expansion:

It's bad for the climate - we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the devastating impacts of climate change, not increase them.
It's bad for clean air - Fairfield County has the worst air quality on the east coast, DEEP must decrease air pollution, not add more.
Connecticut doesn’t need or use the gas - the gas travels through Connecticut to New York on a pipeline that runs through New Milford, Brookfield, Newtown, Monroe, Shelton, and Milford.
We deserve better - our safety, health and climate future should matter more than a giant energy company’s desire to profit.
Thank you for your advocacy,

Samantha Dynowski, State Director
Sierra Club Connecticut
