CALL TO ACTION: Please attend the Town Meeting on Tuesday May 6 at 6:45 BHS Auditorium to vote to move the budget referendum voting to Saturday (BRING YOUR ID)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Voting in CLES while school is in session is inconvenient for the voter and not safe for the students. It goes against the recommendation of the Chief of Police and the BOE Security task force. Please review the timeline of events on how this came to be, (this list is to the best of our knowledge and based on information obtained from BOE meetings and FOIA emails):

12/10/2024 BOE Subcommittee meets
BOE Subcommittee- Security Task Force meets The Chief of Police is a member of this committee. The committee recommends no voting in schools while school is in session to the BOE.

12/17/2024 Selectman Belden emails BOE Chair Youngblood
“I do not at all agree that the recommendation and action is solely or even primarily Chief Puglisi's. The schools are a community asset and are often used for community purposes. I, for one am not in agreement with Chief Puglisi’s point of view on this matter -there have never been any-issues or incidents in Brookfield with voters on school property and this sort of aggressive action feels a bit "shoot from the hip" and "worry beads".- Since voting is such an important community’ matter, I would much prefer to have an extended discussion with ALL involved parties long before the school board took a vote to kick voting out of the schools.”

1/15/2025
BOE meeting (1:06:40)- Rosa Fernandes reports on security task force recommendations (of which Chief Puglisi is a member). The recommendation is the school buildings are used for voting when school is not in session. Dr. John Barile says Chief Puglisi has championed not using the schools while in session. The Board votes 7-0 to prohibit using the schools as voting locations while school is in session.

4/1/2025
The Capital referendum date is set for May 20, 2025. (At this point in time voting is not permitted in schools while they are in session)

4/6/2025 Selectman Dunn emails BOE Chair Youngblood
“We need the school buildings to meet our mandated requirements and to provide voting locations that work for all. We ask for the BOE to support to allow voting in the schools while we work together to achieve solutions that also work for everyone.”

4/9/2025 BOE meeting
BOE Chair Youngblood reopens the conversation on voting in schools while school is in session. First Selectman Dunn is unable to make the meeting as previously anticipated to better describe the situation. As a result the board votes to table the conversation on allowing voting in schools.

5/1/2025 CLES announcement
CLES announces that voting during school hours will be taking place this month to school families

5/6/2025 Town Vote
Venue cannot be changed by the townspeople but the date can. Please attend to vote that we move the referendum budget to Saturday.
