Child Development Institute

Child Development Institute A Professional Advisory Board provides consultation and support for various projects.

The Child Development Institute was established in 1987 to develop programs for early childhood and elementary school teachers, administrators, child development professionals, parents and the community at large. Through the Empowering Teachers Program, The Learning Child Series, lectures, and occasional papers, we provide a progressive perspective on child development and education. In this persp

ective, the child is viewed as an individual in the social context, actively engaged in constructing knowledge through interactions with other people and the physical environment. We believe that the child's educational experience should encompass social, emotional, and imaginative aspects of life in concert with intellectual development. Further, we are concerned that schools and other institutions be developed as communities that attend to the interests and needs of children from diverse backgrounds. The activities of the Child Development Institute, while developed primarily as outreach programs, enhance the educational experience of undergraduate and graduate students on campus. CDI staff and the Faculty Advisory Committee work cooperatively with the College's Early Childhood Center, psychology faculty and graduate programs in Child Development and the Art of Teaching.

In our current information economy, math is everywhere. The people we date, the news we see, the influence of our votes, the education we have access to, the jobs we get—all of it is underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand, or even notice.

Counted Out investigates the biggest crises of our time. Political polarization. Racial biases. Social injustice. Economic inequity. Climate change. And a global pandemic. All viewed through a previously unseen lens: math.

Join us for an evening with author as he presents his debut book Trauma Proof: Healing, Attachment, and the Science of Prevention. Described as “visionary” by both Bessel van der Kolk (The Body Keeps the Score) and Bruce Perry (What Happened To You), Trauma Proof is a story-driven tour of everything we know about child trauma and its lasting and costly impact on individuals and society. With testimony of recovery and resilience from around the world, Trauma Proof’s ultimate destination is the idea that child trauma is not an insurmountable problem. Its passion comes from the authors own journey of a childhood in care and 25 years spent working for the UN on child rights.

Registration is now open for our Fall 2025 Conference, Embracing Play!

Join us for a full day of conversations and workshops focused on the importance of play in children’s lives and the need for adults to create and sustain crucial play opportunities for children in their homes, schools, and community spaces. Play, in all these contexts, is essential for supporting intellectual, social, and emotional well-being of children and adults. Together we will consider how to advocate for and embrace more time and space for play.

✨Did you know the Art of Teaching graduate program is now in its 40th year?✨

Join us on October 11th to celebrate this important milestone! We’ll hear remarks from Art of Teaching co-founder and former Director Mary Hebron and current Director Jerusha Beckerman, along with several notable alumni. Together, we’ll think about the program’s role in the history, present, and future state of teacher education—and of teaching and education in general. There will be time to share stories, photos and videos, and to connect with old friends and form new connections during our reception over food and drinks.

We are excited to share that the application to Sarah Lawrence College’s Early Childhood Special Education Advanced Certificate program is open! Use the link in our bio to find more information and RSVP for the virtual information session.

Now in its second year, this certificate is designed for teachers who already have a Bachelors or Masters degree in Education or a related field and hold initial New York State certification in early Childhood and/or Childhood Education. The 17-credit advanced certificate consists of three courses and has been developed to meet the ever-growing demand for Special Education certification. In two or three part-time semesters, the program leads to certification in Early Childhood Students with Disabilities (birth-2nd grade). Classes are held in the evening on Sarah Lawrence’s Bronxville campus to accommodate those already holding full-time classroom teaching positions.

If you or anyone you know—particularly in the NY area—might be interested in learning more about the Early Childhood Special Education Advanced Certificate, please visit our website or attend our information session.

The Child Development Institute is excited to welcome Dr. Patricia Virella to campus on March 26, 2025!

Schools are facing a “polycrisis” that demands innovative and equitable responses from educators. Join Dr. Patricia Virella MSEd ‘09 to discuss actionable strategies fro teachers and leaders to navigate these complex issues and foster hope in their classrooms and communities. Focusing on critical self-reflection and advocacy for radical change, Dr. Virella introduces an eight-pillar framework for equity-oriented crisis leadership. Through real-world examples and practical tools, we can learn how to address the disproportionate impacts of crises on marginalized students, build resilience, and create and more equitable and supportive education system, one classroom at a time.

We will also celebrate Dr. Virella’s latest book Crisis as Catalyst: Equity-Oriented School Leadership During Difficult Times (Harvard Education Press 2025), available for purchase on March 4th.

Books will be available for purchase at a limited quantity. Book signing will follow lecture and Q&A.

Dr. Patricia Virella is an Assistant Professor of Urban Educational Leadership at Montclair State University. Additionally, Dr. Virella is the Founder of My Academic Writing Routine, an organization committed to demystifying academic writing for grad students, focusing on graduate students of colors.
