There may be four categories of FGC, but each person’s experience with it will look different. There is no one look of FGC, and that’s based on a variety of factors.

Stay tuned to learn more about what those are!

Today is the International Day of Zero Tolerance of FGM/C, and we’re spotlighting a project that Sauti Yetu had the opportunity to work on in late 2020, early 2021. Alongside other agencies, Sauti Yetu spoke to hundreds of women to recruit for the Women’s Health Needs Study.

Some of those findings from the study were condensed into an infographic that you can find online at www.norc.org in several different languages. We’ll also be sharing more about the study and what we learned, so stay tuned!

At Sauti Yetu, we have learned from our years working with African and Muslim immigrants who experience forms of gender based violence (GBV). They face stigma and shame attached to being victims of s*xual assault, often in connection to multiple cultural factors. These communities generally do not consider forms of violence that involve s*x as crimes or violations of the women or girls bodily integrity and rights. This is partly why African and Muslim immigrant women do not report s*xual assault or seek help from service providers. We actively work with these immigrant communities to address social norms and risk factors that continue to perpetuate the cases of GBV.

What is Gender Based Violence (GBV)?
Gender-Based violence refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender. It is rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power and harmful norms. Although women and girls are the most at risk and the most affected by gender-based violence, boys, men, and s*xual and gender minorities also experience gender-based violence.

What does GBV look like?
GBV can classify as anything street harassment (i.e. gropping or cat-calling) to s*xual assault to forced marriage to female Ge***al Mutilation/Forced Curcumcisin. GBV can also exist in non-physical ways, taking on forms of emotional or psychological abuse or manipulation. Someone can experience GBV regardless of their age, social status, s*xual orientation, nationality or any social identifier.

The reach and impact of GBV reaches far and deep. Looking at root causes, social norms and stressors that manifests into individuals inflicting forms of gender based violence on others is necessary to understand how we can work against GBV. Join us during the as we continue to look deeper at the realities of GBV and how we can work towards reducing the cases of GBV.

Today marks International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women. Sauti Yetu built its foundation on advocating and addressing violence against women in the African immigrant communities across New York City.

As we begin the 16 Days against Gender Based Violence Campaign, join us in this campaign as we continue to build awareness and promote advocacy. These next 16 days we will hear from community members about the localized impact of gender based violence as well as workshops on how we can be proactive allies.

Today is NYC Go Purple Day. This day is dedicated to supporting and bringing awareness to domestic violence and the compounding impact it has on individuals and their communities. This evening look out for purple lighting across the city as NYC lights up local buildings and landmarks. Buildings such as Yankee Stadium, 1 World Trade Center, the Queens Borough Hall, and Parachute Jump will be light up in support of this day.

Our staff like Dyani Belen, who is part of our Catchment 2 team in the Bronx, is dedicated to ending all forms of domestic violence and providing the appropriate support to those who have been impacted.

Domestic violence not only affects the individual who experienced it, but also his/her family and community. At Sauti Yetu we are committed to raising awareness and support to those who experience domestic violence as well as celebrating that we are not defined or limited by our experiences.

We are smiling under our masks! 💜Mohammed and Lilly met at Yankee Stadium today to continue distributing Emergency Immigrant Relief Funds to our community members. These funds reach families and individuals that have not been eligible for financial assistance during the pandemic due to a variety of reasons, including immigration status. Applications for the funds are now closed. Thank you to our Community Wellness team for your continued hard work on this project!
