What is Gender Based Violence (GBV)?
Gender-Based violence refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender. It is rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power and harmful norms. Although women and girls are the most at risk and the most affected by gender-based violence, boys, men, and s*xual and gender minorities also experience gender-based violence.
What does GBV look like?
GBV can classify as anything street harassment (i.e. gropping or cat-calling) to s*xual assault to forced marriage to female Ge***al Mutilation/Forced Curcumcisin. GBV can also exist in non-physical ways, taking on forms of emotional or psychological abuse or manipulation. Someone can experience GBV regardless of their age, social status, s*xual orientation, nationality or any social identifier.
The reach and impact of GBV reaches far and deep. Looking at root causes, social norms and stressors that manifests into individuals inflicting forms of gender based violence on others is necessary to understand how we can work against GBV.
