Bronxville Rotary Partners with Kviv Chapter To Help Ukrainian Hospital Treat Wounded Children
Sept. 24, 2026: Faced with unrelenting drone strikes and daily bombings, civilian casualties caused by the war in Ukraine, now in its fifth year, are escalating rapidly -- particularly among children. The invasion in the east of Ukraine has made The Western Ukrainian Children’s Hospital in Lviv, Ukraine, the primary location for children’s surgeries in the entire country. The hospital’s resources are strained.
For many pediatric procedures, using laparoscopic equipment means less tissue trauma and post-operative pain. Incisions are smaller which often means a faster recovery and shorter hospital stay. The hospital currently operates two laparoscopic systems that are in intensive use and periodically experience technical failures requiring repairs. The hospital needs a third tower to expand its surgical capacity to treat pediatric patients and expand its surgical capacity and provide backup when one of the existing towers is unavailable or in use.
Natalia Dolinska, PhD, Pedagogy and former president of Rotary, Lviv, said, “Before the full-scale invasion the hospital treated 15,000 inpatients. In 2025 there were 18,165 reflecting a 21% increase. The new tower will reduce delays in elective surgery and increase access to minimally invasive surgery for emergency patients.”
