The American Parkinson Disease Association - Oklahoma Chapter provides support to the local APDA Information and Referral Center for Oklahoma. This Center provides free information, referral, resources, and support for people with Parkinson's Disease (PD), their care providers and healt

hcare professionals dealing with individuals with PD. Parkinson Disease (PD) is one of the most common incurable diseases affecting movement in people over the age of 55. It is a progressive and degenerative disorder of the nervous system causing it’s sufferers to become increasingly disabled over time. PD affects approximately 1 in every 250 people over the age of 40 and around 1 in every 100 people over the age of 65. ā€œ1 in 100ā€. That’s a sobering statistic. There are as many as 1.5 million cases in North America and 50,000 new cases each year. It was estimated that 16,000 of those cases are in Oklahoma. As you can see, the statistics dictate that if we are not already affected by someone with PD, we will be. Individuals with Parkinson’s disease wage a battle every day. This battle is waged during a time of life these individuals have worked to be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor, and instead are struggling every day to make it through the day. It also affects young families who now have to face the struggle of quitting their jobs and living on disability because of the effects of Parkinson’s disease. This disease not only affects the individual, but also the care partner and the families in their ability to live stress free lives. With your help, we can work to make a difference in each one of their lives. American Parkinson Disease Association

It is common for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) to describe themselves as feeling weak. They may say that their legs are ā€œheavyā€, feel like they’re ā€œmade out of leadā€, or feel like they’re ā€œin concrete.ā€ And they may also feel weak all over or describe weakness in their hands or arms.

This Labor Day, we remember those who, back in 1882, worked hard to advance labor rights and create safer conditions and better wages. As we take a holiday break, we wish all those in our Parkinson’s community a wonderful and fun day.
