Nelson Fernandes has rarely needed the spotlight to be effective.

From JJ’s Caffè to the Downtown Brockton Association, from small business support to municipal campaign strategy, Fernandes has spent years building influence the quiet way: through relationships, ex*****on, and trust.

After helping lead multiple successful campaigns in Brockton’s most recent election cycle, he now serves as Deputy Chief of Staff in the Office of Mayor Moises Rodrigues — bringing that same operator’s mindset into City Hall.

Five months after opening Empower Nutrition, Francois and Iraimi Diatta were faced with the kind of test no new business owner can plan for.

The world shut down.

Instead of closing the chapter, they kept showing up — and Brockton showed up with them.

Today, through Empower Nutrition and Orion BJJ, Francois and Iraimi have built a wellness ecosystem centered on health, discipline, resilience, and community support.

Their work is not just about fitness or nutrition. It is about creating spaces where people feel encouraged, challenged, and empowered to become stronger versions of themselves.

Months after Francois and Iraimi Diatta opened Empower Nutrition, the world shut down.

For new business owners, it could have been the end of the story. Instead, it became a defining chapter.

The Brockton community showed up for them, and they made a decision to keep showing up in return — building Empower Nutrition into more than a wellness shop, and later expanding their impact through Orion BJJ.

Together, the two businesses form a local ecosystem centered on health, discipline, confidence, and community support.

Katie Balboni did not come to Brockton expecting it to become home.

What began as a substitute teaching opportunity at Brockton High School became a career, a calling, and eventually a decision to move to the city she was serving every day.

Now a business teacher at BHS, Katie is helping students connect classroom learning to real-world opportunity — from financial literacy and business concepts to career readiness and professional confidence.

Her work reflects one of Brockton High School’s greatest strengths: the talent already inside the building, waiting to be seen, supported, and connected to what comes next.

Food has been part of Salo Afonseca’s professional life since he was 22.

After more than 20 years in the industry, he left the stability of a major food manufacturing company to open Salo Bar & Grill — turning decades of experience into a Brockton restaurant shaped by culture, hospitality, and community pride.
