Juneteenth commemorates the day the last enslaved African American people finally learned of their freedom in 1865.

It is also a reminder that true opportunity includes access to safe, stable housing and the ability to build generational wealth through homeownership.

Discriminatory practices such as segregation, redlining, and unequal access to mortgage lending prevented many Black families from purchasing homes and passing wealth on to future generations. These practices contributed to lasting disparities in homeownership rates and household wealth that still exist today.

As we honor Juneteenth, the Brockton Housing Partnership remains committed to advancing fair housing and expanding opportunities for all.

April is Fair Housing Month, a time to recognize the importance of equal access to housing and to reflect on both the progress made and the work that still lies ahead.

Fair Housing Month commemorates the passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968, a landmark piece of legislation enacted just 7 days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Act made it illegal to discriminate in housing based on race, color, religion, s*x, or national origin, with later protections added for disability and familial status.

This law marked a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, affirming that access to safe and stable housing is not a privilege, but a right.

The Brockton Housing Partnership remains committed to advancing the principles of fair housing by promoting equity, expanding access to resources, and supporting individuals and families as they navigate their housing journeys with dignity and respect.

Fair housing is not just policy. It is the foundation of strong and inclusive communities.
