Youth SOL Leaders are Making History!

Youth SOL Leaders and Brockton High School seniors Joy Kariuki, Victoria Fleuriot, and Isa Lauture have been selected as the ONLY high school students in the country to present at a national conference at Stonehill College—alongside college and graduate scholars.
Stonehill College’s 4th Annual National Conference hosted by the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity and Social Justice is themed “Creativity and Resistance,” and that is what these powerful young leaders have demonstrated through their organizing efforts with Youth SOL.

They’ve been organizing for real change: from advancing a Community Care & Wellness Team at Brockton High School to organizing for state policy to protect their community.

This is what youth leadership looks like.

Come hear them speak. April 18. 9:30 AM. Stonehill College’s Martin Institute Auditorium.

As our statewide Protect Our People campaign moves forward, Youth SOL leaders, with our statewide network , invite youth across Massachusetts to learn about our youth developed strategy in the face of federal overreach at a Zoom teach-in this Thursday, March 19th.

Young people HAVE ALWAYS BEEN a driving force of social movements and social change. Protecting young people IS in Governor Maura Healey’s self interest.

“Massachusetts has a responsibility to protect its residents from federal overreach and harmful enforcement practices. The Protect Act takes important and necessary steps toward that goal.

As a clergy leader serving in Framingham, I minister alongside many immigrant families. I have talked with people who are afraid to attend court dates, seek medical care, or even bring their children to school because of fears of civil immigration enforcement.

When families withdraw from public life out of fear, the entire community suffers. ”

The Rev. Sarah D. Máto, Rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in
Framingham is a member of MCAN’s Faith Leader Caucus

The Protect Act is moving through the House and is explicitly focused on immigration enforcement. Legislation takes time. It is uncertain. And even strong bills often emerge from negotiation narrower than the moment demands. That is why we have continued to press the Governor to use her executive authority now — to advance the full framework of non-collaboration, accountability, and state sovereignty without delay.
