Today is the Spring Equinox, the birth of the fresh quarter. In the modern Druidic tradition, today is Alban Eilir, and marks the balance between the long nights of winter and the long days of summer. Alban Eilir represents the reception of wisdom in late childhood and the second phase of life after infancy. The Spring Equinox is a time to acknowledge the return of life to the land after the deep slumber of winter. Today is the perfect time to plant seeds of cool-season crops such as spinach, kale, radishes (my favorite!), and peas. Herbs such as parsley and thyme will also begin take root at this time.

The symbol of Alban Eilir is the hare protecting the mysterious “Druid’s egg,” which is still the motif used today for Easter. No one today knows exactly what the “Druid’s egg” is, but it was described by Pliny the Elder as being an egg-shaped amulet formed by the coiling of snakes and about the size of an apple. This amulet, which Pliny called an ‘anguium,’ was said to aid in legal matters and have healing properties. Interestingly, the motif of serpent and egg join together with the Gaulic Goddess, Sirona. Sirona (second photo) is a goddess of healing and is attributed to healing springs of the Moselle valley. The depiction of her with a snake wrapped around her lower arm links her to the iconography of the Greek healing goddess Hygeia, daughter of Asklepios.

A fun way to celebrate the Spring Equinox is to decorate eggs! There are many ways to do so, but one beautiful method is from Rodica Godlewski’s blog, ‘Cooking Is My Inheritance’ (third photo). Search “easter eggs dyed in onion skins” to find the recipe on her blog.

Consider working some egg magic today. Hollow out an egg, rinse it, and then decorate it with symbols of growth and abundance to place on your altar or by a change jar. To take it one step further, place an apple seed in it for an additional boost.

Damien Echols was sentenced to death by lethal injection by Judge David Burnett. Echols, along with Jason Baldwin (16) and Jessie Misskelley (17) (together labeled “The West Memphis Three”) were wrongfully convicted for the murders of three 8-year-old boys: Steve Branch, Michael Moore and Christopher Byers. The boys’ bodies were found naked and hogtied in a watery ditch. Suspected of performing a “Satanic sacrifice,” no physical evidence tied any of the three teen boys to the crimes. In 2007, DNA of hair found at the scene of the crime did not match to any of the convicted men. Burnett claimed this evidence was “inconclusive.” It was not until his retirement in 2010 that the Arkansas Supreme Court ordered new evidentiary hearings for all three men. In August of 2011, Echols, Baldwin, and Misskelly were released from prison. As of 2025, the DNA evidence was sent to Bode Laboratories in Virginia for testing. The results are expected to be released this year.

In 1996, Echols met his future wife, Lorri Davis, and in 1999 they married in a Buddhist ceremony held in the visiting room of the prison. In 2005, while still on death row, Echols published ‘Almost Home,’ with a forward written by Margaret Cho. Also in 2005, film director Peter Jackson and screenwriter Fran Walsh, began their own investigation of the case. Echols spent 18 years total on death row studying Buddhism, meditation, and ceremonial magic. Upon release, he and his wife moved into Peter Jackson’s NYC apartment.

In 2012, Echols published a New York Times Best Seller, ‘Life After Death.’ Also in 2012, the documentary film, ‘West of Memphis’ was released. It was directed by Amy J. Berg and produced by Peter Jackson and Echols. By 2018 he published ‘High Magick: A Guide to the Spiritual Practices That Saved My Life on Death Row,’ which details his spiritual experiences in prison. In 2020, Echols published ‘Angels and Archangels: A Magician’s Guide,’ and in 2022 published alongside his wife, Lorri Davis, the book ‘Ritual: An Essential Grimoire.’

Today, Damien Echols remains a writer, artist, and spiritual practitioner. He maintains his innocence.

On this day in 1901, Manly Palmer Hall was born in Ontario, Canada. Manly was raised by his maternal grandmother. His father died at a young age, and so the two never met. At the 18, he sought to live with his mother, Louise Antist, in Los Angeles. Once in LA, Manly became drawn to esotericism and mysticism, and by the age of 21, was lecturing on subjects of reincarnation, Plato, Pythagoras, and other Hermetic philosophers.

By the age of 19, he published the short publication, ‘The Breastplate of the High Priest’ (1920), and by between the ages of 22 and 23, wrote ‘The Initiates of the Flame’ (1922), ‘The Ways of the Lonely Ones’ (1922) and ‘The Lost Keys of Freemasonry’ (1923). By the age of 27, Manly published his magnum opus, a 700-page heavily illustrated volume titled, ‘The Secret Teachings of All Ages,’ solidifying his scholarly position among Western occultists.

Just before this time in the early 1920’s, one Caroline Lloyd and her daughter Estelle, members of a family who controlled an oil field in Ventura County, California, began sending Manly large sums of money from their families oil fields. With these funds, Manly travelled throughout Europe and Asia to study and observe the many cultures, traditions, and religions. By the 1930’s, Manly met with an auction agent at Sotheby’s to purchase a substantial collection of rare books and manuscripts about alchemy and esotericism. Due to the events of the Great Depression, these many thousands of works were purchased far below market value.

Upon his return to the US, Manly founded the Philosophical Research Society in 1934 in LA. The PRS still exists to this day, and has a collection of over 50,000 works. Hall’s personal collection was so vast that Carl Jung once consulted it when writing his ‘Philosophy and Alchemy’ (1944). Nicknamed, “The Sage of Los Angeles,” Manly also wrote scripts for Hollywood film studios. As a result, he became fast friends with Bela Lugosi, John Denver, and Elvis Presley.

Manly died at the age of 89 while on vacation with is wife, Marie Bauer. The circumstances around his death remain a mystery, though his wife suspected Manly’s assistant, Daniel Fritz, was involved.
