Two champions, indeed! March is women's celebration month, too.

💧On World Water Day, we’re highlighting the women leading the fight to protect clean, safe water in Connecticut. From Margaret Miner, who helped advance landmark protections through her leadership at Rivers Alliance of Connecticut, to Alicea Charamut, a scientist‑turned‑advocate now steering the organization and advising on statewide water policy, women are at the forefront of defending our rivers, wetlands, and drinking‑water sources. At Rivers Alliance Connecticut, that work includes pushing for strong streamflow standards, fighting pollution and toxic contaminants like PFAS, and supporting local groups working to protect waters in their own communities. Water is never just an environmental issue, worldwide; it’s a gender, class, and race issue, and women leaders are working to ensure that where water flows, equity grows.

It’s winter. It’s cold, and there are 10 million reasons to stay indoors. And yet, a little time in the woods is often exactly what we need to shake off any stagnation we’ve built over the past few months.

If you want a good reason to go outside, consider looking closely at tree twigs.

Why twigs? Well, if you want to learn how to identify trees, it’s not a bad idea to study twig characteristics.

But wait. Why learn how to identify trees at all? If you want to read your surroundings more effectively and develop a deeper relationship to wild places, learning the names of trees can help.

Winter is actually a good time to practice this skill. Pictured here are buds and twigs of 16 trees (among hundreds) that grow in eastern North America. Notice how colors, shapes, sizes, and textures vary between species. Studying these details can turn you into a wild tree enthusiast, which just might inspire you to go outside on a day that gives you 10 million reasons to stay indoors.

Got any favorite twigs?

The Friends of the Hoppers are ecstatic that the State Grant came in for the full amount requested! The State even paid back the City for the appraisal and legal expenses. The Perkins Street property will now be added to the City preserve to be protected as open space in perpetuity.

Finally, we can breathe easy and celebrate that the Hoppers trail system, glacial features, endangered species habitat and spectacular viewshed will remain intact for all our children and grandchildren to enjoy!

We thank everyone who worked on this project especially Scott Heth of the ELCCT who guided us with all his expertise in land acquisition and management, Dawn Leger, who worked so hard to write a spectacular grant application, Councilwoman Sue Tyler for her continuous encouragement and support, and our Mayor Jeffrey Caggiano, who pulled everything together to make this happen.

We also have much gratitude for the larger community of all those who enjoy the Hoppers for their outpouring of enthusiasm and support for this project.

Job well done everyone!!
