Our next meeting will be on Saturday, January 10, 2026. Time and place TBD. We will have a special meeting on researching your Revolutionary War Ancestors as part of our country's 250th celebration all year long. Specifically learning about searching for their pension records which can reveal tons of information about their lives. These same techniques can be used for later wars such as the War of 1812 and the Civil War.

We have special guest, author Cynthia (Cindy) Elder, coming to talk about her research in preparation for her TALES OF THE SEA two-book series: THE JOURNEY BEGINS and THE DRUMBEATS OF WAR. From a genealogy perspective, Cindy will share her extraordinary find of a box of letters written in the mid 19th century which was just casually sitting on a screened-in porch at her in-laws' house in Barrington, RI. The letters were written by her husband's second great-grandparents, James and Ruth (Fish) Jenkins, who lived in West Barnstable on the Cape. James was a sea captain writing home to Ruth before they were married, and then after they were married and Ruth was accompanyng him on his long voyages, Ruth was writing home to her mother. And from there began Cindy's research.

P.S. There was a second box of letters sitting on that porch, too, written (or narrated) by freed slave, Thomas White. To read more about the contents of this box of letters in the Smithsonian Magazine, go to https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/tattered-pages-discovered-in-storage-reveal-an-enslaved-mans-daring-bid-for-freedom-and-his-second-life-at-sea-180986838/

This drawing is of Castle Garden where immigrants came into New York City during the mid to later 1800s before Ellis Island was built. First it was built as a fort, then used as a theater, and by 1855 it was a immigrant processing center. By 1890 it closed for immigrants before Ellis Island opened up in 1892, and later became an acquarium until 1941. Today it stands as a National Monument known as Castle Clinton.

Today you can search Castle Garden records for your family at Family Search for free: https://www.familysearch.org/en/blog/ny-castle-garden-ellis-island
