Not many employers can say their staff count went from 180 to three million over just a few years.
Community Foundation of Livingston County advisory board member Dave Rex can.
While Dave was the owner and CEO of Rex Materials, headquartered Howell, his 180 employees designed, engineered and manufactured customized high temperature insulation for industry.
After retiring in 2020, he joined his wife Karen in a new venture: beekeeping. They started out small, but as they learned more the number of hives grew and their interest increased.
Their business, Bee Rex Apiary, now has an estimated three million bees, all working together to produce the best honey, the best queen bees and best products for beekeepers.
Dave’s experience growing up on the family farm where he and Karen now live taught him how to grow the crops that bees love and thrive on.
It’s a lot of work for the bees and the beekeepers. Dave laughs when he quotes the saying “Beekeeping = Farmer + Insanity.”
The queen bees start laying eggs – slowly starting in March but then 1500 a day – by April.
After the long winter, Dave and Karen must open and meticulously inspect each hive. Sometimes new queens are introduced after a hive is split when there are enough bees. There is growth, disease and sometimes death to deal with.
Bees are dedicated to their work and are amazing, enthusiastic “employees.” Once spring arrives the bees each fly 50,000 miles and literally beat their wings off during their six-week lifespan. There is always a new crop of bees ready to take over.
Dave was pleased to be invited to join the board of the Community Foundation for Livingston County advisory board.
He has a strong history of nonprofit boards, chairing the Livingston County United Way for two years.
“My family has funds invested in the Community Foundation aimed towards childhood education. We’re committed to giving. I’ve seen how the right organization can have a positive impact on the community.”
“I don’t respect inertia,” he said. “I’m always thinking ‘why not?’”
The Community Foundation for Livingston County is a permanent community endowment established in 1991 to improve the quality of life for the County.
