During the first couple of weeks in June you might get lucky and see snapping turtles laying eggs along the edge of the trail. Snapping turtles are mostly aquatic and usually don't leave the water except to lay eggs. The female digs a hole with her back legs, lays 10+ eggs, covers the hole and then returns to the water.
You also might notice nests which have been disturbed by predators such as raccoons or fox with empty shells scattered around a dug-up nest. If the nest is undisturbed, the hatchlings emerge many weeks later, dependent on the temperature. Along the Brickyard Trail, it's most likely to see the 1" baby turtles emerging in October.
Obviously it is a good idea to not get too close to mama snapping turtle. She can extend her neck surprisingly fast and bite.
