Amen
Today is Mother’s Day, a day where we show love and gratitude to our mothers.
However, it is not just humans who have strong emotional bonds with their mothers and when we look at what we do to animals, mothers within animal agriculture are some of the most horrifically exploited animals trapped within the system.
Mother pigs are locked in farrowing crates, tiny cages so small that they can’t turn around in them. They are trapped for up to 5 weeks in these crates every time they give birth. They bite on the bars, desperate to escape.
Mother cows are restrained and forcibly impregnated by workers in the dairy industry. This is done by the worker forcing their arm inside the a**s of the cow, holding her cervix in place through the lining of the a**s, before injecting bull semen inside of the vagina.
Once the cow gives birth her baby is taken away from her almost immediately. Mother cows cry out for their children, but they’ll never get them back. We’ve taken them away, so that we can consume their mother’s milk instead.
Today, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, millions of mothers are being exploited, their bodies used, their babies stolen, and their throats cut. We celebrate family whilst denying others, who also have strong familial and matriarchal bonds, their families, their children and their mothers.
So this Mother’s Day, please think of all those mothers who are suffering because of the choices that we make. All the ewes in the slaughterhouses. All the cows crying out for their children. All the sows in the farrowing crates. All of the animals who are trapped within the system of exploitation that we as consumers actively create.
