Green Oak Township Fire Department was established in 1966 to provide fire protection and emergency services to the citizens of Green Oak Township. The Department consists of a full time Chief, Deputy Chief, 3 career Firefighters, Fire Marshal, Administrative Assistant, and paid-on-call Firefighters. The paid on call members are residents of

the community who volunteer their time and services to respond to emergencies within the Township. The Department provides emergency service coverage to the Township's residents from three fire stations. The main fire station is Station 81, located at 9384 Whitmore Lake Road, just north of Silver Lake Road and west of U.S. 23. This station houses an engine, a ladder truck, a heavy rescue and is home to the Department's Administrative Offices. Station 82 is located at 11411 East Grand River, just west of Pleasant Valley, and houses an engine, a tanker, a rescue truck, and a Gator four wheel drive ATV. Station 83 sits at 9863 Rushton Road, just north of Ten Mile Road, and is home to an engine, a tanker, a rescue truck, brush truck, and a Zodiac boat. Depending on the severity of the incident, fire apparatus from one, two, or all three stations may be called on to respond. The Department is also a member of the Livingston County and Washtenaw County Mutual Aid Associations, meaning that neighboring fire departments are available to provide assistance as needed, just as the Department is called on, from time to time, to provide assistance to the fire departments in adjoining communities. These include fires, motor vehicle accidents (PIAs), medical emergencies, hazardous materials spills, gas leaks, power line incidents and weather related emergencies. The Green Oak Fire Department is emergency medical technician (EMT)/basic life support (BLS) level non transporting department. The Green Oak Fire Department monitors and maintains the local Emergency Warning (Tornado) Sirens with a 24h monitoring system. The sirens are tested at 1:00 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month. The Department has the ability to activate the sirens immediately if a tornado, or other emergency requiring sheltering, threatens Green Oak Township.

A little training evolution Sunday morning.

The expectation is that our engineers move this quickly and efficiently when it’s the real thing. 😂😂😂

On Saturday 06-06-2026 members from GOFD got to participate in the Oakland Community College Flashover Training. This training is part classroom and part practical where participants learn about conditions that can cause a flashover.

“A flashover is a deadly and rapid transitional phase in a fire where the heat radiating from accumulated smoke and hot gases causes all combustible objects in a room to simultaneously ignite”

Key word, “deadly”. Being able to recognize these conditions and learning what to do to prevent them is life saving. The skills learned today are valuable and the GOFD members who participated will come back and share that knowledge with other members strengthening the team as a whole.

Annual hose testing, always a cherished time in the fire service (little inside joke there for those that know😁😁). This is something of a ritual but it is required to insure that the hose we use to fight fires can withstand the rigors of the firefight which is crucial when lives are on the line (literally).

GOFD has many thousands of feet of hose that need to be tested and this is done via inspection and pressure testing every piece. Much like regular training, regular truck checks, regular equipment checks and PPE checks build confidence and competence, annual hose testing builds confidence as well in that we can feel secure in the knowledge that the line we’re fighting fire with will perform as expected with less chance of a catastrophic failure because of that testing. In a job that can kill you, we’ll take as much peace of mind as we can!!

This past weekend GOFD hosted the Ann Arbor Township Fire Academy at station 81. Students worked on ladder operations which included working on and around the ladder trucks for various tasks that the ladder could be utilized, from accessing elevated positions, rescues, and flowing water to name a few.

The fire academy touches on most aspects of the fire service and truly is just the introduction to the world of firefighting but it prepares the students for that world and GOFD takes an active role in the area fire academies whether it is hosting a “practical operations” day or proctoring tests for the cadets, being a part of the process is important to the outcome.

On 5-29-2026 GOFD participated in a “Family Fun Night” at Hawkins Elementary School. We like to regularly participate in Public Relations (PR) events like these as it helps keep us connected with the community and share what we do whether it’s the trucks, the equipment or the job itself, it’s alway important to be public facing because that is who we’re here for and we love it!!

GOFD responded with multiple units and applied approximately four thousand gallons of water to extinguish the vehicle and soak down the wood as an added precaution. Nobody was hurt during this incident.

Thank you to Hamburg Township Public Safety Department, Hamburg, Michigan USA for covering the township for us while we were out mitigating this incident.

Why is the flag only half-staff until noon on Memorial Day?
We reserve the morning hours on Memorial Day to mourn the more than a million Americans who lost their lives in service. At noon, their memory is raised by the living who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty.
Raising the flag to full-staff at noon on Memorial Day symbolizes our commitment as a country to keep the memory of our fallen soldiers alive, just as we continue to fight for and defend our living freedoms. The U.S. Flag Code states, "The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing," which is why on this especially solemn and significant flag holiday, we raise the stars and stripes to the top of our flagpoles, so we can remember that our nation and its ideals live on thanks to the many who died fighting for it.

Today at 09:59 GOFD was dispatched to a structure fire off of Grand River. Crews arrived to find a working basement fire in the home with animals inside but all people were out of the home. Brighton Area Fire Authority and Green Oak Fire crews worked expeditiously to get the fire under control while simultaneously searching for the dog and two cats in the home. The animals were rescued with one of the cats being taken to the vet for further evaluation. Nobody was hurt during this fire and the fire was contained to the fire room in the basement. Crews performed exceptionally well to save lives and property today.

Thank you to Brighton Area Fire Authority, South Lyon Fire Department, Hamburg Township Public Safety Department, Hamburg, Michigan USA and DART - Disaster Assistance Response Team for all of the work at today’s call.
