Utah’s push for Major League Baseball may have another major player.

Front Office Sports reports Jazz and Utah Mammoth owner Ryan Smith says his group will be “aggressive” if there is an opportunity to pursue an MLB expansion franchise for Utah.

The Larry H. Miller Company is already leading Big League Utah’s effort and owns the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees. It has also identified a stadium site and helped secure $900 million in state funding for a ballpark if Utah lands a team.

MLB has not yet opened a formal expansion process, but Salt Lake City is widely viewed as a leading contender. The Miller's have a contract that would likely require the two families to work together.

Ryan Smith on Podcast: Our group will be pretty aggressive in how we pursue sports. OK? I think that’s probably all I’ll say. We do it our own way. We don’t do a lot publicly. I actually think that’s not the way expansion really gets done. Salt Lake’s ready for it, but if you saw how we operated with the NHL, it just happened. We said we wanted the NHL, and a couple of months later we had a team and we were rolling. The sale of the Angels, it just happened… So we’ll be aggressive if there’s an opportunity there.
