Marine Mammal Stranding Center MMSC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to the
RESCUE, REHABILITATION & RELEASE of marine mammals and sea turtles.

All photography/videography of marine mammals on this page is conducted under a Stranding Agreement between NOAA NMFS and the Marine Mammal Stranding Center under the authority of the Marine Mammal Protection Act, taken under NMFS permit #24359. All media inquiries and requests for permission to use photos and videos must be submitted to [email protected].

Who remembers this incredible photobomber from one of our seal releases? 🦅🦭 As one of our Grey seals made his way back into the surf, an osprey swooped in on the hunt for a fish! Sometimes the best photos are the ones you never planned for!💙

💙 A HUGE thank-you to our generous anonymous donor! 🦭

We recently received a dry-erase board from our Amazon Wish List, and we thought you’d like to see it hanging up and ready for action as we prepare for the upcoming seal season! 🎉

These boards are essential communication tools throughout our hospital, helping our Stranding Staff keep track of each patient’s daily diet, medication schedule, veterinary notes, and other important care instructions.

This particular board is now in service in our Pool House, where it will help our team monitor the patients being treated in Pens 1–4, as well as the seals in our Rehabilitation Pool.

It may seem like a simple item, but it plays an important role in keeping our patients’ care organized and our team informed! 🩺🐾

Thank you so much for your thoughtful gift and for helping us prepare to care for the seals who will need us this season! 💙

🦴 Today is ! 🦣

National Fossil Day celebrates the scientific and educational importance of paleontology and the need to preserve fossils for future generations.

Did you know that a fossilized walrus skull and tusk were discovered during a dredging operation just off the coast of Brigantine? 🦭 Similar specimens have been found along the Mid-Atlantic coast as far south as Virginia!

During the last Ice Age, the coastline was approximately 70 miles east of Atlantic City, and New Jersey was part of the range of incredible animals like walruses, mammoths, and caribou. Imagine these amazing creatures roaming our region thousands of years ago!

🦭 Seal Spotlight: Grey Seals!

Grey seals are one of the most common seal species we see here in New Jersey. Most of the Grey seals admitted to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center for rehabilitation are pups and juveniles under six months old. Adults can reach up to 8 feet long and weigh as much as 800 pounds!

Grey seals are also the only seal species found in New Jersey that is sexually dimorphic, meaning males and females have noticeably different appearances. Males are typically nearly solid black, while females tend to be lighter in color with spotted coats, as shown in this photo.

Ever heard of a “horsehead seal”? 🐴 Grey seals earned this nickname thanks to their long, distinctive noses. But their scientific name might be even more descriptive! Their scientific name, Halichoerus grypus, translates to “hook-nosed sea pig.” 🐷🌊 Now that’s a name you won’t forget!

With more than 125 dogs and their families joining us this year, our biggest Pup Strut ever was filled with smiles, laughter, and plenty of four-legged fun!
