VFW Post 2125

VFW Post 2125 To foster camaraderie among veterans of overseas conflicts. To serve our veterans, the military, and our communities. To advocate on behalf of all veterans.

Please note, we no longer rent out the function hall. The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves. In t

heir misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000. Since then, the VFW's voice had been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI bill for the 20th century, the development of the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, VFW won a long-fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, giving expanded educational benefits to America's active-duty service members, and members of the Guard and Reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. The VFW also has fought for improving VA medical centers services for women veterans. Besides helping fund the creation of the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II and Women in Military Service memorials, the VFW in 2005 became the first veterans' organization to contribute to building the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November 2010. Annually, the nearly 2 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliaries contribute more than 8.6 million hours of volunteerism in the community, including participation in Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week. From providing over $3 million in college scholarships and savings bonds to students every year, to encouraging elevation of the Department of Veterans Affairs to the president's cabinet, the VFW is there.

On this Memorial Day weekend, we pause to honor and remember Private James A. Oliver, Jr., a brave soldier who served in the United States Army during World War I—and for whom our post is proudly dedicated. James entered military service in Massachusetts and was assigned to the 104th Infantry Regiment of the 26th Infantry Division, known as the “Yankee Division.”

Private Oliver made the ultimate sacrifice for his country on July 19, 1918, during one of the most intense periods of combat in World War I. He is laid to rest at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in Belleau, France, where many who fought in that campaign are honored. His final resting place stands as a solemn reminder of the courage and sacrifice of Americans who served far from home in defense of freedom.

In recognition of his bravery and heroism, Private Oliver was awarded the Croix de Guerre, a prestigious French military honor given to those who distinguished themselves through acts of valor in combat. This decoration reflects not only his personal courage but also the respect and gratitude of allied nations.

The 104th Infantry Regiment, part of the Yankee Division, earned distinction as one of the first American units to engage in sustained combat alongside French forces. Their actions helped turn the tide during a critical phase of the war and demonstrated the growing strength of American involvement on the Western Front.

While there is no definitive record of the exact circumstances of his death, it is believed that Private Oliver was killed during the Battle of Soissons, part of the Second Battle of the Marne and the broader Aisne-Marne Campaign. This offensive, launched in July 1918, marked a major turning point in World War I, as Allied forces began to push German troops back after months of stalemate.

The 26th Division fought under French command as part of the French Sixth Army, contributing to the rapid counteroffensive that forced German forces into retreat. The success of this operation helped shift momentum decisively in favor of the Allies for the remainder of the war.

Like so many of his generation, Private Oliver answered the call to serve at a time when the outcome of the war—and the future of democracy—hung in the balance. His sacrifice represents the courage of ordinary individuals who rose to meet extraordinary challenges.

As we reflect this Memorial Day, let us remember and honor Private James A. Oliver, Jr., along with all the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their selflessness, courage, and dedication will never be forgotten.
