From the 2022 District Conference - original song about one of the foundations of Rotary - The 4-Way Test

Is it the Truth?
Is it Fair to all Concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

This year's Rotary District 7570 (stretching from Wi******er to Kingsport, TN) Conference was held right here in Harrisonburg at JMU's Atlantic Union Bank Center with our District Governor Andy Vanhook and other area Rotarians presiding. Each area club presented a short video describing the focus areas of their club and we thank Nadia Dames for doing her normal outstanding job describing our club and activities. For those of us fortunate to be able to attend, we were able to attend several workshops on how to grow and better our clubs, hear inspiring speeches from Ramesh Ferris, a polio survivor, and from David Beasley, former governor of South Carolina, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program. There were also club and individual awards, the Four-Way Test Speech Contest Winner, TED talks and an informative panel on human trafficking. There was also plenty of time for fellowship, catching up with old friends and making new ones. We strongly encourage everyone to attend a District Conference (held in March or April each year) as this is a great way to learn about how Rotary helps people all across the world in so many ways. One speaker described Rotary as "friends working together to change the world" and it is truly amazing to see how our monetary and personal contributions to Rotary and the Rotary Foundation really do help "...people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves".

It’s Superhero Day! 🦸‍♂️🦸‍♀️
April 28th isn’t just another day, it’s a full-on celebration of superheroes, both the ones in comic books and the ones walking among us!
Sure, when you hear "superhero," you might picture someone in bright tights and a cape (maybe even underwear on the outside, we’re not judging). But real superheroes come in all forms: they wear police badges, nurse uniforms, Rotary pins, or maybe just a big, kind smile.
Superhero Day reminds us that true heroism isn’t about flying or laser eyes, it’s about heart. It’s the courage to step up when someone needs help: feeding the hungry, comforting a stranger, changing a flat tire on a lonely road.
Today (and every day), let’s keep our eyes open for moments where we can be the hero someone’s hoping for. Don’t wait for "someone" else to do it, be the someone!

At our April 7, 2026 club "meeting", we performed our semi-annual highway clean-up on Centerville Road south of Bridgewater. It was a beautiful, clear evening and many hands made for light work. Everyone then enjoyed delicious Francesco's pizza and great fellowship afterward. Thanks to all that could help with this service for our community and to Harrisonburg Rotarian Chester Bradfield for providing the parking area for our highway clean-up

At our March 31, 2026 club meeting, we welcomed Amanda Miller Garber as our guest speaker. Amanda is the Resource Development Coordinator for Central Valley Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Habitat homeowners build alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. The local chapter started in 1988 and has built over 95 homes to-date. Another area of aid is the Critical Home Repair unit that allows homeowners to stay in their homes by addressing health, safety, and accessibility needs in their home. Amanda began her role in November of 2025 and reported that they always need general volunteers and donations but they also need family sponsors/mentors to guide new homeowners through the first year of ownership, donations for the basket of household supplies given to new owners and support for the Restore in Dukes Plaza. For more information or to donate or volunteer, please go to https://www.centralvalleyhabitat.org We also were pleased to have Morgan Eye as our guest for the evening.

At our March 17, 2026 club meeting we were so very fortunate to have Makinto as our amazing guest speaker for an inspiring and informative message. The Liberian-German musician, storyteller, educator, Mennonite pastor and activist has played piano for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican and for Nelson Mandela in Germany. As a musician, he's traveled in 60 countries performing at venues such as Madison Square Garden, the Sydney Opera House and at Brazil’s largest soccer stadium. His humanitarian work in Africa earned him the title of Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Development for an agency of the United Nations. At the meeting, Makinto spoke and sang about several of his many "encounters" in life that led to where he is today. These included his mother and father meeting as students in Lawrence, Kansas, his grandfather being wounded in both WW I and WW II, iconic South African singer Miriam Makeba, Nelson Mandela, composer/singer/actor Juanita Fleming and the "Dancing Queen" that would later become his wife, Mukarabe. Together, they founded Amahoro International, a nonprofit dedicated to giving hope and restoring dignity to Burundian refugees and equipping them to participate in the transformation of African communities. The word “Amahoro” comes from the Kirundi (Burundian) expression for peace that conveys blessings, well-being and fullness of life. The organization is a Conference-Related Ministry of the Mosaic Mennonite Conference. They moved to Harrisonburg in the summer of 2024 so he could enroll in seminary studies at Eastern Mennonite University for a Masters in Christian Leadership. For more information on Amahoro International, please go to www.amahorointernational.net.

At our March 3, 2026 club meeting, we welcomed Beily Valdez as our special guest. Beily is a TAHS junior that we sponsored at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) assembly at Virginia Tech in December. RYLA is a leadership training program that brings together high school students from across our Rotary district to further develop character and leadership skills and learn about Rotary. This experience offers the opportunity to build self-confidence, gain exposure to a variety of issues and people, meet active community leaders, and learn valuable information and career skills. Beily related her experiences at RYLA through anecdotes and a PowerPoint presentation. Her favorite memory from the event was the impromptu snowball fight on Friday night. Other events included helping prepare 14,256 meals kits for "Rise Against Hunger", the "True Color" personality test and the DJ Dance Party. Beily related that the event helped her to be a better leader and she will encourage other students to attend in the future. Among her many activities, Beily is a member of the TAHS National Honor Society, the Debate Club and the Decca Club as well as being a CNA at VMRC. We thank Beily for being an awesome representative of our Club and our Community.

On February 17, 2026, we held our annual Valentine's Banquet at the Bridgewater Retirement Community with Rotarians, partners and friends enjoying great food, fellowship and music. Guest musician Crysta Bliss serenaded the group with beautiful love songs - both originals and covers. To end this very special evening with our Valentines and friends, roses were given to those in attendance with the charge of cherishing them or passing them along to someone who may need a little show of love or recognition in their life. Thanks to Rotarian Nadia DaMes for sharing this tradition from her father and for Charlette McQuilkin for arranging such a special evening.

The founder of Rotary, Paul Harris, died on January 27, 1947. More than 300,000 Rotarians mourned. An outpouring of contributions to The Rotary Foundation created the Paul Harris Memorial Fund, which continues to support the Rotary Foundation. Paul P. Harris was born in Racine, Wisconsin. At age three, when his family fell on hard times, they moved to Vermont to live with Harris’ paternal grandparents. He attended Princeton University, the University of Vermont and the University of Iowa. For the next five years he worked odd jobs as a salesman and reporter for a newspaper, on fruit farms, as an actor, a cowboy, and on cattle ships that traveled to Europe. Harris eventually settled in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago, where he lived until his death in 1947.

Paul Harris began his law practice in 1896 in Chicago. In 1905, he organized the first Rotary club “in fellowship and friendship” with three business associates, Silvester Schele, Gustavus Loehr and Hiram Shorey. His initial goal was to create a club of professional men and businessmen for friendship and fellowship. Early on, Harris realized that Rotary needed a greater purpose. While Harris served as president of the Chicago Rotary Club in 1907, the club initiated its first public service project, the construction of public toilets in Chicago. This step transformed Rotary into the world’s first service club.
