Bridgewater Virginia Ruritan Club We are the Bridgewater Virginia Ruritan Club. Ruritan National has been serving America's communities since 1928 and has the motto "Fellowship and Service"

We meet at the Bridgewater United Methodist Church on Green Street at 6:30pm in the social hall the first Monday of every month unless otherwise noted in The Shenandoah Journal or on this Page. Our Board meets on the Thursday prior to the Club meeting at 7:00 pm in the Arey Assembly Room of the Bridgewater Town Hall.

In our August meeting, the Bridgewater Ruritan Club recognized two more scholarship winners. Austin Armstrong graduated from Turner Ashby High School and will be attending JMU in the Fall, and participating in the Marching Royal Dukes. Lulu Fitzgerald also graduated from TAHS and will be studying Dairy Science at Virginia Tech. We wish them much success in their academic futures. Our program was presented by Destiny Alston, Sophie Higgins, and Daphne Antwi of the JMU Chapter of Every Nation Campus. JMU's Every Nation Campus (ENC) is part of a global family of Churches presenting the ministry of Jesus Christ to college students. ENC is active in 711 churches and 1,450 campuses across 86 nations. The Bridgewater Ruritan Club is presenting 15 scholarships in 2026. This is a high-water mark for our Club and we're pretty pumped about it. In our July meeting we awarded seven more scholarships to local seniors. From Blue Ridge Christian School, Allison Wheelberger, Lydia Golin, Madeleine Munday. And from Turner Ashby High School, Caitlyn Crawford, Mason Judd, Emma Mizell, and Emma Randall. Presenting the awards for the Club were Liz and Robbie McCammon, Whitney Reusser, Jim Tongue, and Ron Williams. We wish these local scholars much success in their future endeavors. For our July Bridgewater Ruritan Club meeting, the program was presented by Greg Riddle of the Bridgewater Historical Society. Greg discussed the Bridgewater area before Europeans arrived and how the area was a pass-through for Native Americans. He also shared vintage photos of Main Street with modern comparisons which was very interesting. Our delicious meal was prepared by the Rawley Springs 4H Club. The June program of the Bridgewater Ruritan Club was presented by Jarrett Hatcher of First Tee. First Tee Shenandoah Valley is more than golf. It’s about learning life skills, building confidence, and having fun along the way. First Tee works with kids and teens to manage emotions, resolve conflicts, set goals, plan for the future, and appreciate diversity. They give access to children who would not otherwise have access to golf. They host 15 tournaments across the Valley, They provide clubs and low or no-cost to ensure the kids can participate. 2026 is a banner year for the Bridgewater Ruritan Club. In addition to celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we are able to present fourteen scholarships to local high school students. Scholarships were presented to five Turner Ashby students in our June meeting. They were Ella Benin, Ayden VanHorn, Elizabeth Seiber, Kayla Mata, and Laurel Armstrong. Presenting the awards were Jim Tongue and Ron Williams. We wish these local scholars much success in their future endeavors. May is Ruritan Month! The first Ruritan Club was chartered on May 21, 1928, in Holland, Virginia. The Bridgewater Club dates to 1939. In the May meeting of the Bridgewater Ruritan Club, we celebrated the 98th Birthday of the Ruritans organization with door prizes, balloons and cupcakes. We also finalized our 2026 Vidalia onion sale. Thank you to everyone who bought onions, we hope you enjoy them. Highlights of the upcoming Rockingham County Fair (August 10–15, 2026) were reviewed, and exciting acts are coming to the Grandstand. One important change to our Fry Shack Foodbooth is the addition of Churros to our menu. For our program, Cassandra Frysinger, SVEC Energy Program Coordinator, gave an overview of SVECs renewable energy programs, focusing on homeowner solar programs. Some of the interest has diminished since tax credits ended in 2025, but solar can still save energy costs. When deciding about installing solar, one consideration is roof condition. Solar installers won't repair a roof and roofers won't work under solar panels. If a roof is aging, it may need to be replaced before solar installation. Trees may need removing and insurance costs will change. And when comparing installation offers, consider the experience and track record of the installer, not all installers are equal and older companies may be more likely to help with warranty work in the future. Our meal was prepared by Crosslink Community Church. Next month we'll discuss scholarships, with some exciting updates. Dewey Arey has been recognized as the 2025 Bridgewater Ruritan Club "Fair Volunteer of the Year". Bob Wheatley presented the award in our April meeting. In our April meeting, the Bridgewater Ruritan Club hosted Jackie Hensley, Manager of the Central Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Harrisonburg. ReStore is a thrift store that supports the Habitat for Humanity mission to provide homes to deserving people who could otherwise not afford a home. ReStore relies on volunteers, and donations of time, money, land, and connections with contractors to help build and modify homes. They are participating in the Great Community Give and have a annual Golf Tournament on May 29. The Annual Banquet is September 16th, 2026.
