Somerset County 4-H

Somerset County 4-H We believe the future belongs to our exceptional youth members. This is accomplished by using the knowledge and resources of caring adults.
(1)

With guidance and acceptance, we offer our members and community unparalleled opportunities that focus on building leadership, confidence, service, and loyalty. 4‑H is delivered by Cooperative Extension—a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. The 4-H Youth Development Program uses a learn-by-doing approach to e

nable youth to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need to become competent, caring and contributing citizens of the world. The goals of the 4-H Youth Development Program are to:
• Provide informal, educational programs for youth in grades K–13 (one year out of high school).
• Encourage responsibility, community awareness and character development in youth.
• Strengthen skills for adults working with youth through publications and training.
• Improve community partnerships and collaborations.

How It Started, How It’s Going – Somerset County 4-H Alumni Spotlight:
Meet Kate McHale!

For eight years, I was a member of the dog and alpaca clubs in Somerset County 4-H. During my time as a 4-H’er, I had so many great experiences, like working as a TOPS Camp Counselor in the summers, visiting Washington, DC for the National 4-H Conference, and spending countless days with friends at the farm training the alpacas!

My time in 4-H taught me that I loved bringing people together and creating community through agriculture. I get to do that in my job now, as I am working on my PhD in Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership at The Ohio State University. As a PhD Student, I work on research projects about 4-H, youth development, and rural sociology. I study how we can improve 4-H programs to make them more effective, accessible, and engaging for youth who live in rural places.

How It Started, How It’s Going – Somerset County 4-H Alumni Spotlight:
Meet Amanda (Staller) Hess!

Amanda was an intern for 4-H Summer Adventure Week from 2000-2003, and joined 4-H Senior Council as a member in 2001. Through her involvement in 4-H, Amanda learned the importance of community service, such as participating in a local American Heart Association Health Walk (photo 1).

Currently, Amanda is an administrative assistant for Somerset County 4-H and a volunteer co-leader of 4-H Senior Council. She hopes to inspire teens to learn about the importance of community service as she did. Amanda recently self-published her first novel. She attributes the encouragement to do so to all of the 4-H leaders and volunteers she has had the pleasure of working with over the years.

How It Started, How It’s Going – Somerset County 4-H Alumni Spotlight:
Meet Sarah (Fenwick) Lally!

My 4-H experience began in the WOOF Dog Club and ended in the New Centre Dairy (NCD) club. I was a member of WOOF for 7 years and NCD for 3 years. My love for agriculture and the dairy industry began with the NCD club and blossomed into my passion for agriculture. My 4-H experience led me to my degree in Large Animal Science with a dual-minor in Dairy Science and Agribusiness from Delaware Valley University. With my degree, I now assist farmers everyday through my work with the United States Department of Agriculture-Farm Service Agency. I am also still active in Somerset County 4-H as a New Centre Dairy Leader where I share my dairy industry passion with the youth members every day.
